Daily News Analysis June 2024 ‘Hmar-Kuki-Zomi tribes’: June 12

About Hmar-Kuki-Zomi tribes:

  • Hmar Tribe:
      • Hmar tribe, also called Mar or Mhar, are the dwellers of the North Eastern Part of India.
      • The Hmar people are a scheduled tribe ethnic group from the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya in Northeast India.
      • They belong to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group of tribes and are recognised as Scheduled Tribe under the Constitution of India.
  • Kuki-Zomi Tribe:
  • The Kuki-Zomi people are a diverse ethnic group residing in the mountainous regions of Northeast India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.
    • The Kuki-Zomi tribe is an indigenous community found in Northeast India, particularly in Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and parts of Nagaland and Tripura. 
    • Since the tribes have a similar ancestor and culture, they are also identified as Chin or Mizo people.

About Tribes Advisory Council (TAC):

  • TAC is a statutory body constituted by the Governor of a state in India under the provisions of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
  • According to Article 244(1) of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of India:
    • TAC is established in each State with Scheduled Areas (SA) and, if directed by the President, in States with Scheduled Tribes (ST) but no Scheduled Areas.
    • TAC comprises a maximum of 20 members, with approximately three-fourths representing ST in the State.
    • TACs are established in 10 states with SA: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Rajasthan.



Why in the News?

  • Recently, the Indigenous Tribes Advisory Council reported that recent violence has completely separated the  Hmar-Kuki-Zomi tribal people of Jiribam from the Meitei community in the district.
