Why in News?
- Researchers have recently discovered a new genus and species of microscopic crustacean, named Indiaphonte bijoyi, in the Kavaratti lagoon of Lakshadweep.

About Indiaphonte bijoyi
- Classification: It is a microscopic crustacean belonging to the family Laophontidae within the class Copepoda (Order: Harpacticoida).
- Discovery & Nomenclature: Discovered by researchers from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT); the generic name Indiaphonte honors India, while bijoyi honors renowned marine scientist S. Bijoy Nandan.
- Unique Features: It is characterized as meiofauna (tiny invertebrates less than 1 mm) and stands out for its lack of sexual dimorphism (males and females look identical), a rare trait in its family.
- Ecological Significance: As a bio-indicator, it reflects environmental health (pollution and climate change) and plays a vital role in marine food webs by producing essential Omega-3 fatty acids.
