Key points:
- India has officially been designated as the headquarters and secretariat of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), following an agreement signed with the central government.
- Launched in April 2023 by the Prime Minister during Project Tiger’s 50th anniversary, the IBCA is a treaty-based intergovernmental organization focused on the global conservation of seven big cats—tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, puma, jaguar, and cheetah.
- IBCA became a legal global entity in February 2024 after ratification by five countries: India, Liberia, Eswatini, Somalia, and Nicaragua.
- India will provide ₹150 crore as budgetary support for five years (2023–2029) for infrastructure, corpus creation, and operational expenses.
- The agreement includes provisions on visas, privileges, immunities, and administrative functions for IBCA personnel and premises.
