Key Points:
- Delhi has begun enforcing a fuel ban on End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) — banning fuel supply to diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years.
- A total of 350 enforcement teams from Delhi Police, Transport Department, and MCD have been deployed 24×7 at all 498 fuel stations in the city to implement the order.
- The decision follows a directive by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued earlier this year to curb vehicular pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR).
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at fuel stations to automatically detect ELVs by cross-checking vehicle data with the VAHAN database.
- The deployment strategy is tailored according to traffic density and fuel station locations, with high-risk ELV hotspots receiving special focus.
- A phased rollout for the rest of NCR will follow:
- In November 2024: Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Sonipat.
- In April 2025: Remaining NCR areas.
- Additionally, from November 2024, non-BS VI, non-CNG/LNG/electric vehicles registered in other states will be barred from entering Delhi.
