What is an EPIC Number (Voter ID number)?
The Electors Photo Identification Card (EPIC) is a 10-digit unique voter ID number issued by the Election Commission of India to each registered elector.
It serves as a primary form of identification for voters during elections.
Reasons for Duplicate EPIC Numbers
- Manual voter ID allocation by State/UT CEO offices before ERONET led to errors.
- Identical alphanumeric EPIC series were sometimes assigned to electors in different states/UTs. This resulted in duplicate EPIC numbers across different Assembly Constituencies in various States/UTs.
About ERONET: Digital Electoral Roll Management System
ERONET (Electoral Roll Management System) is a web-based platform developed to streamline electoral roll management.
It integrates voter registration, migration, and deletion processes across states, ensuring a centralized approach to electoral roll maintenance.
ERONET supports multiple languages and scripts, making it more efficient for election officials.
Why in News?
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) clarified on March 2, 2025, that despite reports of duplicate Voter ID numbers in two states, a person can vote only at their designated polling station in their constituency.
