What is Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR)?
- MMR is the number of maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births during a given time period.
- It reflects the reproductive health status and quality of maternal care in a region.
- Maternal death: As defined by WHO, it is the death of a woman during pregnancy or within 42 days of termination, from pregnancy-related causes.
- Highest MMR: Women aged 20–29 years.
- Second highest MMR: 30–34 years age group.

- UN SDG Target (Goal 3.1): Reduce global MMR to <70 per 1,00,000 live births by 2030.
- As per the latest data from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner (2019–21), India’s MMR declined to 93 per 1,00,000 live births from 97 (2018–20) and 103 (2017–19).
