About Charaideo Moidam:
- It is a tumulus, resting place of the royalty and aristocracy of the medieval Ahom Kingdom (1228–1826) in Assam.
- After the 18th century, Ahom rulers adopted Hindu cremation and entombed the ashes and bones in Moidams at Charaideo.
About UNESCO World Heritage Sites:
- These sites are designated by UNESCO for having cultural, historical, scientific or other forms of significance.
- Nomination Process:
- The nomination for World Heritage designation was assessed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), an advisory body to UNESCO.
- Based on criteria (iii) and (iv) of UNESCO’s criteria for cultural properties, ICOMOS recommended their inclusion.
- Criteria (iii): Ahom Moidams are a remarkable testimony to the Tai-Ahom cultural tradition that has influenced the area’s history.
- Criteria (iv): Ahom Moidams are a superb example of mound-burial systems, showcasing significant points in human history and architectural achievements.
