What is AIOS?
- A mix of fencing, sensors, and patrol mechanisms running close to the LoC.
- Functions as a first line of defence against cross-border infiltration and illegal activities.
Recent Upgrades
- Counter-drone systems and air defence guns to detect and neutralise hostile drones.
- Integration of:
- Border Surveillance System (BOSS): Cameras + radars.
- Laser fences: Trigger alerts if breached.
- Short-range surveillance equipment.
- More surveillance drones and kamikaze drones (suicide drones) for real-time threat neutralisation.
Operational Measures
- Area Domination:
- Multiple patrols in vulnerable areas.
- Temporary Operating Bases (ToBs): Troops stationed for 48–72 hours to saturate areas and keep terrorists on the move.
- Tactical Redeployment:
- Reinforcing vulnerable zones along LoC and hinterland.
- Discussions to hand over some interior zones to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) → frees Army & Rashtriya Rifles for LoC and deep hinterland operations.
Why in News?
- The Army is upgrading the Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS) along the LoC in J&K, adding counter-drone systems, advanced surveillance, and redeployment strategies after Operation Sindoor.
