Tips and Tricks to Solve Drawing Inferences

Inference reasoning is used to determine the conclusion based on facts or assumed facts.

You must be familiar with the fact that critical reasoning requires an analysis of each fact, systematic thinking, and understanding of elements. To solve the drawing inference reasoning, one must understand the author’s perspective and what the text says or implies. Making a logical inference needs board text and background knowledge. Generally, when a reader makes an inference, they use some clues from the text and the knowledge they have about the subject. An inference is an elementary and educated guess that draws a statement based on the knowledge, and the text provided. Find out more about solving drawing inferences as you go through this article.

What do you mean by an inference?

An inference is an act of reaching a conclusion made from evidence or inference reasoning. It is also referred to as a conclusion drawn from assumptions or a passage of text.

What is the difference between an inference and a conclusion?

A conclusion is the logical step of an information series. A conclusion is logically derived information given based on facts provided. Concluding a piece of information means defining the final reflection of a discourse. The last sentence or words of your information penned to reach the final settlement comes at the end of a thought process. Science defines conclusion as the interpretation of data of an experiment being performed in the laboratories.

Inference, on the other hand, refers to a judgement or conclusion. It requires shifting from a piece of given information to generalisation. For instance, when you go to your home and see your table or furniture in a miserable condition, you may infer that your pet has shredded everything. Hence, your interpretation based on the situation is not a final opinion, and it just has got you to reach there. Hence, it is a simple example of drawing inference meaning that can give an idea of the inference concept.

How to make an inference?

Before you learn the tips to solve inference reasoning, firstly, learn how to make an inference. Following are the five basic steps involved in making an inference –

Step 1: Identify an inference question

Identifying an inference question means determining whether the inferences reasoning questions have asked you to draw an inference or not. The obvious drawing inferences reasoning questions will have the words “imply”, “suggest,” or “infer” in the tag. For instance – “The author seems to imply that….” Similarly, some questions do not directly infer from a statement. It means some inference reasoning questions do not consist of the inference words. For example-

“With which of the following statements would the author agree?”

Step 2: Trust the Passage

Now that you have confirmed you have an inference question, start using the passage to ensure that your inference is accurate. If you make an educated guess, your inference may be false. But in an SSC exam, you will use the information in the passage to prove its accuracy. You will be ensured that one of the answers from the given choices is correct without making an educated guess.

Step 3: Search for clues

The next step in making an inference is searching for vocabulary, supportive information, dialogue, description, and character actions from the given passage. The description supporting the adjectives in the answer choices helps you make an inference easier.

Step 4: Narrow down the choices

It is the final step of making inferences from the reasoning questions. After analysing each option briefly, use clues from the passage and think which one is the correct inference.

Step 5: Practice well

To develop expertise in making inferences, you have to practice well independently. Start making your inferences from sample passages regularly.

Tips to solve drawing inferences

To solve the drawing inferences for your examination, firstly download the questions pdf and begin the preparation by keeping in mind the following tips-

  • Read the question carefully and understand what it implies.

  • Choose an inference based on your knowledge to understand the statement.

  • Search clues and pick up your choices.

  • Employ the elimination procedure

  • To solve drawing inferences, one should have a deep understanding and logical thinking about the questions.

  • Practice daily to have the necessary confidence while drawing inference out of any passage questioning.

Importance of drawing inferences

Drawing an inference has significant importance in academic exams.

  • It assists in identifying the reasoning skills of an applicant.

  • It helps in analysing the ability and logical understanding of an applicant.

  • Drawing inferences also helps to evaluate the reasoning skills of an applicant.

Conclusion

Making inferences is a subsection of reasoning where an applicant forms an opinion or conclusion from the given evidence and facts. Sometimes, some statements have inference words confirming the inference question. At the same time, many questions do not have the inference words, which makes it difficult for an applicant to draw an inference or not. In such a situation, the applicant has to identify an inference question by themselves. Although, drawing any inference from the inference reasoning requires a profound understanding and logical thinking of the subject matter. An applicant must read the question carefully, search for clues, narrow down choices, and practice daily to solve the drawing inferences in no time.
