Telemeter

A Telemeter is an apparatus that is used to record the readings of an instrument and transmit them by radio. Discover more about the principles of a telemeter and its uses.

Table of Content
  •

A telemeter is a scientific instrument which is used to measure the distance between movable or moving objects. It can also measure the distance between one stationary and one moving object. These instruments first came through military troops in order to calculate the distance of rival cantonments on the basis of the sounds of gunfire. A telemeter is still widely used in military technology and strengthens the missile lock abilities and range finding technology. Another use of telemetry can be found in marine animals with bird tracking, weather predictions, space and satellite explorations and is used in many more activities.

Principle of Telemeter

Apart from what a telemeter does, it is important to figure out the principle of a telemeter:

Telemeters were highly useful in military operations. There were two models with attached two telescopes and the main idea was to focus on the same target but placed at a distance apart. In the given configuration, engineers were able to measure the relative distance between the two telescopes and the target.

Telemetry is a concept based on trigonometry with respect to mathematical calculations. In modern telemetry, radars, sound waves and GPS, also known as Global Positioning Systems in technology, are used to make the calculations quick and highly accurate. With the help of a GPS telemeter, precise distances along with topical maps are produced. Meanwhile, as a factor of the distance between beams, laser telemetry can calculate the distance between two objects. Often, distance is measured with the help of an internal computer drive, symbolising the bouncing of sound waves, map data, and factorial speed represented by a telemeter scale.

The Scaling of a Telemeter is dependent on the types of telemeters used. For example, a chronograph telemeter is used as a watch measuring the distance on a dial with the help of a hand, whereas digital telemeters present distance as a measurable quantity or a target time on a screen. These scale settings are often adjusted to find the most useful and accurate results.

Uses of telemeter

Taking the principle of telemeter into consideration, Let’s evaluate the uses of telemeter:

Telemeter in an environmental scope

The weather forecasters use a telemeter to predict the speed and distance of an upcoming or nearly approaching storm. It is also used to calculate air density. A telemeter is used to track birds and marine life which is helpful in the collection of migratory data of various species in the course of Biological sciences.

Telemeter in warfare and space activities

A telemeter is one of the peculiar tools which prevents crews from approaching heavy snowfall. It calculates and compares the different readings in a telemeter depending upon the location used. Another use of telemetry is in fighter jets to measure the magnitude of a rival fire along with finding the positioning of expected moving points and places locked by missiles on the destroyed targets. In the case of space activities, agencies use telemeter data to monitor the orbits of a satellite along with many other aspects.

Telemeter in the Oil and Gas Industry

While a well is being drilled, telemetry transmits formation evaluation and drilling mechanics information. Measurement and logging while drilling are two of these processes. Drilling equipment receives information from thousands of feet below the ground and transmits it to surface sensors. The demodulation is done through the drilling hole. DSP and noise filters translate the pressure wave into useful information. Geosteering and Formation evaluation use this information.

Telemeter in Transportation Services

Telemetry gives transportation companies useful information about the performance of vehicles and drivers by collecting data from sensors placed in the vehicle. The purpose of this is many-fold, including insurance rating, staff monitoring, and expected maintenance. In addition to measuring traffic flow and vehicle lengths along with weights, telemetry is also used to connect traffic counters to data recording services.

Conclusion

A physical phenomenon measurement device, such as a satellite, spacecraft, etc., is used to transmit measurements to a distant observer or recorder. Wireless data transfer mechanisms are often thought of as using ultrasonic, infrared, and radio waves; they can also apply to data transfer over other channels, such as computer networks, optical links, telephone or power lines. In many modern telemetry systems, SMS is used to receive and transmit telemetry data because of GSM’s low cost and ubiquity. A telemeter is packed with a sensor, a display, recording, and a transmission path. Wireless or hard-wired, analogue or digital, electronic devices are widely used in telemetry, along with other technologies such as hydraulics, mechanicals, and optics.

Ans. A Telemetry, with the help of automation, is used to handle communications across multiple sources of data. It also measures the speed of detectable threats. Along with the collective data, it is also used at a wired speed to address incidents and alert correlation with in-built automation.

Ans. Telemetry is referred to as a subset of the mechanism of monitoring. It presents the measured data given by a monitoring tool. Telemetry can be programmed to provide and extract particular monitoring data like real-time alertness for specific incidents and resource utilisation at massive volumes.

Ans. Endpoint telemetry enhances threat detection coverage for security teams. There are several advantages when it comes to identifying techniques in adverse situations, it identifies malicious behaviour and intent in the process at an early stage which is extremely beneficial.

Ans. There are four ways in which telemetry is beneficial.

  1. It is extremely beneficial in detecting unknown threats.
  2. It gives a greater context to identify malicious attacks and intent along with any foreign invasion with the supplementary data.
  3. It provides great assistance to identify and detect adverse behaviour sooner and earlier in the process of the cyber kill chain.
  4. It helps to minimise the visibility of the blind spots against any attacks which is extremely important to prevent and have a check over users’ visibility and data.

Ans. There are mainly three types of telemetry systems :

  1. Wire telemetry system/ Wire-link telemetry
  2. Wireless telemetry system/ Radio telemetry system which is further divided into two parts: (a) Satellite Radio Telemetry system (b)Short-range Radio telemetry system
  3. Fibre optic telemetry system/ Optical Fibre telemetry system
