In the year 2008, the maiden IPL tournament was won by Rajasthan Royals. They became the first team to make their place on the prestigious IPL final winners list. There were 8 teams in this tournament. The final of the maiden tournament was played at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on 18 April. In this match, Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings to become the winner.

Deccan Chargers were champions of IPL 2009. Consequently, they became the second entry to the IPL final winners list. This was the first time that IPL was taken outside of India to South Africa. In the IPL 2009 final, Deccan chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore to snatch the title. A whopping 200 million viewers from India tuned in for this match.

For the third IPL edition in 2010, the tournament was brought back to India. The action-packed final of this tournament was held in Mumbai between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Here, Chennai Super Kings came out on top to win their first-ever IPL.

The 2011 edition was also held in India. This season was played between 10 teams instead of 8. These 10 teams were divided into 2 groups of 5 teams each. Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore made their way to the final. This match was won by Chennai Super Kings. They became the first team ever to win the tournament twice.

The fifth edition of IPL in 2012 was won by Kolkata Knight Riders. As the IPL editions kept on happening, we saw the emergence of new winners. The subsequent IPL winners were: Mumbai Indians (2013), Kolkata Knight Riders (2014), Mumbai Indians (2015), Sunrise Hyderabad (2016), Mumbai Indians (2017), Chennai Super Kings (2018), Mumbai Indians (2019), Mumbai Indians (2020) and Chennai Super Kings (2021).
