Proteins are a key to life. In both theory and practice, the different types of cells in all organisms are controlled by proteins. The difference between plant tissue and animal tissue is that plant cells primarily contain cellulose, which is an insoluble substance with a tough and heavy structure while animal cells store protein molecules in their cytoplasm or membrane.

Plant tissue and animal tissue both act as protective covering for the cell. However, plant tissues are composed of cells whose cell walls are covered by cellulose while animal tissues are made from cells that have a protein-based membrane. 

Plant tissue

Cellulose is the main component of plant tissue. It is an insoluble substance that has a fibrous structure. Cellulose is part of the plant’s genetic code, which makes it very important to animal life as well. The cellulose within the cells of animals is broken down through an enzymatic process known as cellulolytic hydrolysis. This process greatly facilitates protein digestion as it breaks down the cellulose into smaller molecules that can be digested by digestive enzymes.

Animal tissue

Animal tissues are made up of cells that store protein molecules in their membrane or cytoplasm. Animal cells contain enzymes that break down proteins. This process is known as proteolytic hydrolysis. The fundamental difference between plant tissue and animal tissue is that cellulose is a primary component in plant tissue while protein molecules are found predominantly in animal tissue.

Difference between plant tissue and animal tissue

  1. Plant tissue specializes in cellulose, which is a sturdy substance that plays an important role in plant life.
  2. Animal tissue specializes in protein, which plays an essential part in animal life.
  3. Plant tissue mainly consists of sugar molecules known as cellulose.
  4. The main difference between plant tissue and animal tissue lies within the structure of the cell wall.
  5. Animal tissues contain a protein-based membrane while photosynthetic cells in plants contain a cellulose-based membrane.
  6. Cellulose is resistant to bacteria, germs and fungi while proteins are more easily affected by them.
  7. The chemical structure of animal tissue is composed of proteins, while plant tissue is made up primarily of cellulose.
  8. Plant cells contain photosynthetic membranes, which allow them to store sugar molecules in their cells.
  9. Protein acts as a nutrient for the growth and development of animals while sugar plays an important role in the growth and development of plants.
  10. Plant biology emphasizes the importance of cellulose, which helps to protect plant genetics through strong cell walls.
  11. Mucilage secreted by mesophyll cells forms a protective covering that prevents dehydration in plants during droughts or dry seasons. 
  12. Animal tissue lacks photosynthesis due to lacking chloroplasts within its cell membrane.
