The Unique Identification Authority of India is one of those government controlled organisations that was established by independent India early after independence under some different leadership groups under the ruling governments. This organisation was established in 2016 under the very famous Aadhar Act. This organisation is now under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Purpose of UIDAI
The reason behind the creation of UIDAI was very specific. When the bill regarding the issuing of numbers for the Aadhar was made compulsory, this committee was made so that it could ensure that every citizen of this country has this number. So to ensure all this Aadhar centres had to be made in every nook and corner of this country. This problem was considered to be the second most important problem for this committee at that time as well.
The main problem was to create awareness among the poor people of this country. As we know, there is a percentage of the population in respectable terms that has been poor in this country so it was very important to create awareness by telling them the importance of the Aadhar number. In some of the western countries like the United States of America, the Aadhar number can be compared to the social security number. The fact that the poor population in India is not less, so awareness had to be created and the poor could not be ignored at all.
Responsibilities of UIDAI
UIDAI being one of the very early established organisations under the government has a lot of responsibilities and every official has to make sure that they complete their responsibilities. As per the facts that have been stated, till the end of the month of October last year, approximately hundred and thirty crore aadhaar numbers have been issued.
Now this number has the potential to tell you that almost every Indian citizen has been issued an Aadhaar number but again as in all sectors, there are misleading people who do fraud in whichever field of work they are involved in. So, it is very normal that there must be people in thousands that must have made multiple Aadhars under different disguises. There could be multiple reasons that people do this and some of those are that sometimes these are used to book tickets in various modes like aeroplanes and trains under false identities, sometimes these things are also made to make other means of identification misleading like passports. The people who do these things can do anything like they can also be involved with a terrorist organization or can also make one just to fiddle with their religion.
Another very important responsibility of the Adhaar committee is the fact that it keeps a complete check over the process of the allotment of this number along with keeping an eye on the complete process and evaluation of the Aadhar number.
Aadhar
In the above information that we have discussed about UIDAI, we have mentioned the Aadhar number many times but now we will discuss the Aadhar number in further detail as well. The most easy thing to notice about an Aadhar number is that it is a twelve digit code and it is actually easy to rectify this as the Aadhar number is always written in the form of four digits written in three different groups. Now, the moment all this process of the Adhar had been fully checked and was reported to be absolutely error free, the chief economists of the World Bank said that the Adhaar was the most sophisticated and easy-to-use Aadhaar system in the whole world.
After almost all the people of India had been granted an Aadhar number as per the reports some of the important information regarding human rights had also come to the fore. Some of those rights were that if a person has an Aadhaar, he or she must know that the Adhaar does not guarantee or give any rights to the people itself. One most important information was also given and that information was that the Adhaar cannot be used as a means of identification for any person who wants to travel to the countries of Nepal and Bhutan. Earlier, not getting an Adhaaar was voluntary and not at all compulsory. So during the early part of the decade. As a result of a hearing, the Supreme Court declared that if any person does not have an Adhaar then he or she should not suffer at all.
Challenges regarding Aadhaar
As Adhaar was just being started to be used as a method of recognition or identity. So whenever we bought a house or wanted to buy a car or had to undergo any government related process, we had to have an Aadhaar. But an Aadhaar number incorporated almost every important detail that was everything for our privacy. Hence, to rectify these things the Indian Government had to make choices. The first choice was to stop the manufacturing of Aadhaar and the second choice was to exempt the consideration of Aadhaar for all the above stated matters. Now, as we have already mentioned, the Aadhaar numbers had already been given to a hundred and thirty crore citizens of this country, so taking them back would have its own huge set of problems. So, it was decided that the UIDAI would proceed with the decision that Aadhaar is not required for these things.
Conclusion
The Unique Identification Authority of India is one of the most respected organisations in this country and one of the very few ones who have always remained away from controversy. The decision of making an Aadhaar has been a very successful one.
