The Forest Research Institute (FRI) is an institution in the field of forestry research in India for Indian Forest Service cadres and all State Forest Service cadres. It is a Natural Resource Service training institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. It is one of the oldest institutions of its kind, and it is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The University Grants Commission designated it as a deemed university in 1991.
The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), a staff college that teaches personnel for the Indian Forest Service, is located on the Forest Research Institute campus (IFS).
History
The Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehra Dun started out as the Forest School in 1878. FRI was founded in 1906 under the name Imperial Forest Research Institute. Later renamed Forest Research Institute and Colleges, the institute has a variety of centres scattered across the country that conduct research and teach forest officers and rangers. The training and research centres were awarded independent status of institutes after the country’s forestry research was reorganised and the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) was established in 1988. On the recommendations of the UGC, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the Forest Research Institute, currently one of the institutes under ICFRE, was granted the status of Deemed University in December 1991.
Objectives
To provide education in the fields of forestry and the environment as it sees fit
To support forestry and environmental research, as well as the promotion and diffusion of knowledge. Silviculture, Resource Survey and Management, Social Forestry, Minor Forest Produce, Ecology and Conversation, Genetics and Tree Propagation, Forest Protection, Forest Botany, Forest Products, and Forest Operations are among the subjects explored by the Institute. Biodiversity, tree enhancement & seed production, non-wood forest products, social forestry & wasteland afforestation, design development of modern forestry tools, and so on are some of the emphasis areas
Through extension activities, raise public awareness of the forest and environment
To perform all additional acts and things required or desirable to advance environmental conservation and forest and wildlife protection
Location
Between Kaulagarh in the north and the Indian Military Academy in the south, the FRI and College Area campus is a census town. Its western boundary is formed by the Tons River.
Training Facilities
The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), a separate agency of the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, is housed on its campus (MOEF). The Central Academy for State Forest Services is also located there (CASFOS). The Wildlife Institute of India used to be on campus, but it has since relocated to Chandrabani and is now run by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. IIFM is a MoEF independent autonomous institution with strong forestry research and related activities linkages to FRI. IIM Kashipur is currently offering an executive management programme for working people on weekends. Cellulose & Paper Technology, Environment Management, Forestry Management, and Wood Science Technology are among the four MSc programmes offered by FRI’s deemed university, as are two P.G.Diploma degrees in Natural Resource Management and Aroma Technology.
Every year, it also accepts a substantial number of Ph.D. candidates.

The museum is open everyday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A $40 entry fee per person is required, with a small price for automobiles. The museum is divided into six sections:

Before becoming a full-time activist in the Independence movement, Rash Behari Bose worked here as a chief clerk.
