The company’s products include power generation equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators, transmission equipment such as transformers and switchgears, railway traction equipment, industrial machinery such as gearboxes and compressors, and a wide range of castings and forgings.

BHEL is one of the few companies in the world with the capability to design and manufacture 500 MW nuclear steam turbine generator sets. The company is also engaged in the manufacture of solar photovoltaic equipment.

BHEL has been conferred the prestigious Maharatna status by the Government of India.

Establishment of BHEL

BHEL was established in 1964 by the government of India. The company’s primary purpose was to provide heavy engineering products and services to the country’s burgeoning industrial sector. It also has a wide range of products and services to offer to the Power, Transmission & Distribution, Oil & Gas, Process Industries, and Marine sectors. In 1974, Heavy electrical limited was merged with to form Limited public enterprise. 

There products of BHEL are divided in two part-

BHEL’s product range includes:

  • Heavy electrical equipment such as transformers, large diameter pipes, and high voltage switchgear
  • A wide range of process plant equipment including boilers, turbines, generators, heat exchangers, pressure vessels and compressors

BHEL has a vast network of 14 Manufacturing Divisions, four Power Sector Regional Centres, over 100 Project Sites spread all over India and abroad. The company also has a well-established Overseas Marketing Division for promotion of exports. In order to meet the ever increasing market demands effectively and efficiently, BHEL has set up two new manufacturing units viz., an Alloy Steel Plant at Haridwar and a Casting Unit at Ranipet.

BHEL has been conferred with the prestigious Maharatna status by the Government of India in 2013, recognition of its massive scale of operations and integrated heavy engineering capabilities. The company is also one of few public sector undertakings to be given this status.

Maharatna status allows greater operational and financial autonomy to BHEL, giving it the freedom to take decisions on new projects and investments without seeking prior approval from the government.

Projects of BHEL 

The company is currently working on a number of large-scale projects in India and abroad, which are helping to contribute towards the country’s economic growth.

Some of these projects include:

  • The development of a 750 MW thermal power plant in Bangladesh
  • The construction of the world’s largest hydroelectric power project – the 6000 MW Nathpa Jhakri Project in Himachal Pradesh
  • The setting up of a new gas turbine manufacturing facility at Bhopal
  • Participation in prestigious international projects such as the Riyadh Metro and the Doha Metro

BHEL is also aggressively expanding its presence in the renewable energy sector, with plans to set up a large number of solar and wind power plants over the next few years.
