Alcohol and Phenol

This article will highlight the difference between alcohol and phenol.

Table of Content
  •

Alcohol and Phenol are both compounds that are considered as organic compounds and they are produced by the metabolism of organic compounds.

These two chemicals have different properties and have different uses. The properties of alcohol depend upon its concentration level while the properties of phenol can vary due to the way it is used.

Alcohol can be used in many crafts such as cleaning glass and polishing metal surfaces. Phenol is mainly used in industrial processes where it is a component of polymers such as polycarbonates, resins, pesticides, herbicides, dyes, etc.

Phenol is also used in making chemical compounds such as phenol red and phenylketone. However, it is dangerous to use too much of this chemical which can be fatal. These two chemicals have similar properties and both are solubility in water

Alcohol is a compound that is widely used in alcoholic beverages. It is also used as a solvent in various other applications such as paints and glues. In addition to these uses, alcohol can also be used as a disinfectant to clean wounds because it can break down grease and oils. It has an antiseptic property that prevents microbial growth on the skin wound that helps in healing fast.

What is alcohol?

Alcohol is a compound which is the principal component of alcoholic beverages. It is produced by the fermentation of sugars present in plants such as sugar cane, honey, fruits, etc. The alcohol present in drinks such as beer and wine are often called ethyl alcohol.

The chemical formula for alcohol is CH3OH or CH3OHCH2OH. Alcohols are usually colorless in nature but it can also be partially used along with specific dyes to give her a beautiful color ranging from yellow to red depending on the concentration level of alcohol present in the mixture.

Alcoholic beverages have been associated with social gatherings where people get drunk and sometimes have fights and crimes when they become intoxicated with alcohol.

What is Phenol?

Phenol is a chemical compound with the formula C6H5OH. According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), phenol has a chemical formula of C6H5OH. .

Phenol is usually white or colorless in color, but it can also be colored with special dyes. This is because some impurities can be present in the phenol which changes its color.

Phenols are mainly soluble in water but they have a very low solubility level which depends on the concentration level of phenol present in the water.

Difference between Alcohol and Phenol

Formulation

Alcohol is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid that is commercially available as a pure compound or in the form of mixed solutions with other liquids. It’s formula is CH3OH or CH3OHCH2OH. Alcoholic beverages are formulated from alcohol.

Phenol is a chemical compound with an antiseptic quality that acts as a disinfectant to clean wounds and prevent microbial growth. It also has an unpleasant odor which is why it is usually mixed with fragrances to conceal the odor and make it less offensive. It also makes it easier to be inhaled by humans but at the same time its irritating vapor can cause coughing in people who are sensitive to its smell.

Uses

Alcohol is widely used in alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and liquor. It is also used as a solvent in various other applications like paints, etc. Alcohol can also be used as a disinfectant to clean wounds because it can break down grease and oils.

There are many uses of phenol which include use in industrial processes, as a component of polymers such as polycarbonates, resins, pesticides, herbicides, dyes and so on. Also phenol is sometimes used in making chemical compounds such as phenol red and phenylketone. Phenol is also used in medical applications such as antiseptic lotions and mouthwashes which prevent the growth of microbes which cause infections. It is also used in making liquid soaps, disinfectant sprays, and hand cleaners.

Properties

The properties of alcohol depend upon its concentration level while the properties of phenol can vary due to the way it is used.

Alcohol can be either a liquid or a solid depending on its concentration level. It has an antiseptic property that prevents microbial growth on the skin wound that helps in healing fast. Alcoholic beverages are usually stored at room temperature but they can be stored at low temperatures to keep them from spoiling too fast.

Answer. Alcohol is a substance which is produced by the fermentation of sugars present in plants like sugar cane, honey and fruits. According to the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) alcohol can be stored at room temperature or even low temperatures to keep them from spoiling too fast. Alcohol evaporates at temperatures above 700C where it has a boiling point of 1430C.

Answer. When alcohol condenses its boiling point will decrease and when it condenses it becomes a liquid. The best thing that happens to alcoholic beverages after they have been produced is when they have been completely fermented where their properties change from liquids to solids. Alcohol will condense when it is kept in cold temperatures where it will have a higher boiling point.

Answer. When the alcoholic beverage is produced by fermentation, the yeast present in it start producing energy through the consumption of sugar present in the drinks that eventually produces ethanol, or alcohol.
