Every year, thousands of students ask themselves the same question before registering: how difficult is the CAT exam? This guide will help you by analysing trends in difficulty for every section of the exam, providing you with data from throughout the last 10 years, comparing CAT to other management tests, and outlining a step-by-step preparation strategy based on what is expected of students who will be sitting for the exam in 2026.
Is CAT really so tough? Watch to find out -
The CAT examination consists of 68 questions divided into three sections:
|
Verbal ability and Reading comprehension (VARC) |
24 questions |
|
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) |
22 questions |
|
Quantitative Aptitude |
22 questions |
The candidate must finish each section within the allotted time of 40 minutes. The candidate can only move to the next section after the time of the prior section is over. The total duration of the exam is 120 minutes.

CAT 2026 SyllabusThe Common Admission Test (CAT) is the most competitive MBA entrance exam. Calling it impossible to crack is inaccurate. Here is what actually makes it hard:
No official syllabus: Every year an IIM sets the question paper for CAT on a rotational basis. IIMs do not release a fixed syllabus, preparation requires covering everything across three broad sections.
Relative scoring (percentile): A CAT aspirant is not competing against a fixed cutoff, the competition is against 3+ Lakh people. Even 70% accuracy may not deliver 99 percentile.
Time Pressure: Less than 105 seconds per question on average. Knowing the answer is not enough, speed matters.
Sectional Time Limit: Unlike other competitive exams, it is not possible to borrow time from one section to compensate in another.
Unpredictability : The CAT exam has three sections. One of which is DILR - Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. This is widely considered as the trickiest section of the exam. Set selection in DILR can alone make or break your score.
Negative marking : Wrong selection of MCQ answers costs 1 mark. Although TITA (type in the answer) questions do not carry negative marking.
That said, CAT rewards conceptual clarity and speed, not random guessing. Students from any background with the right preparation and strategy can crack CAT. Visit FREE DEMO CLASSES by Unacademy for free introductory classes for VARC, DILR and Quant.

The following chart shows the overall exam difficulty year by year. Each column represents a year and colors indicate difficulty.
Key Insights:
2017, 2022 - 2023: Hardest years overall, typically under IIM Lucknow, Bangalore or Calcutta.
2018, 2019, 2020: Moderate - these years saw a balancing correction after tough papers.
2024 - 2025: IIM Calcutta and Kozhikoke both conducted relatively balanced papers.
The heatmap below breaks down difficulty by section and year.
Reading the heatmap -
DILR is consistently the most volatile section. It swung hard (2017, 2018) to Moderate (2019 - 2021) to Hard again (2022).
VARC is the most stable section. It has stayed moderate in most years, with brief dips to Easy in 2018.
QA follows the overall paper trend. When IIM Ahmedabad or Lucknow sets the paper, Quant difficulty spikes. IIM Kozhikode and Indore tend to set moderate QA sections.
The balancing pattern: If DILR was hard one year, it eases the next and vice versa. This can be used to calibrate focus for upcoming exams.
Each section of CAT has a distinct character. Below is a detailed card for each.
Kindly note that this table is indicative in nature and is based on recent trends.

Class 10 level maths: The QA section tests concepts from Classes 8 - 10. Engineering level maths is not required.
Non - engineers often outperform in VARC: Arts and commerce graduates tend to score 98-99%ile in VARC due to their reading background.
IIMs value diversity: Academic background diversity is actively weighted during final IIM selection. Non engineers are not at a disadvantage.
Average scores in graduation: Graduation marks are relevant but not determinative. Strong CAT scores and good interviews can compensate for the same.

Solution |
|
Aiming to attempt all questions |
Wrong MCQs cost marks and blind attempts reduce net score |
Attempt 30 - 38 questions with high accuracy |
|
Wrong Set Selection in DILR |
Wrong set can cost time and marks |
Efficiently scan DILR sets before solving them |
|
Ignoring TITA questions |
TITA questions do not have negative marking hence increasing chance to increase net score |
Always attempt TITA questions even when uncertain |
|
Not taking mocks seriously |
Mocks are diagnostic not predictions. They help you to get more clarity about your preparation. |
Analyse mocks properly. It is okay to make mistakes but it's important to not repeat them. |
|
Speed reading RC passages |
Misreading leads to wrong answer selection even after knowing the topic |
Develop faster reading habits without costing efficiency. |
