SSC JE Eligibility Criteria

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) organises various national-level exams including the exam for the post of Junior Engineer. The position can only be filled by candidates who qualify all the levels of the exam, for which they need to fulfil the requisite eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria for SSC JE Exam

Here are the details of the eligibility criteria that must be met by every candidate –

1. Nationality/Citizenship

The candidate must be any one of the following-

a. A citizen of India

b. The subject of Bhutan or Nepal

c. A Tibetan refugee who arrived in India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of living permanently in India

d. A person of Indian descent who has migrated to India permanently from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire, and Vietnam in East Africa

A candidate falling in categories (b), (c), and (d) above must be a person in whose favour the Government of India has issued a certificate of eligibility. A candidate who requires a certificate of eligibility may be admitted to write the test, but the offer of appointment will be made only when the Government of India has provided the eligibility certificate.

2. Age limit as on 01.01.2021

As of January 1, 2021, the age limit for Junior Engineers in various Ministries, Organisations, and Departments is as follows:

  • The date of Birth filled by the candidate in the online form and the same recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary Examination Certificate are going to be accepted by the Commission for determining the age and no subsequent request for change are going to be considered or entertained
  • Ex-Servicemen (ESM) who have already obtained permanent employment in the civil sector under the Central Government in Group “C” and “D” posts after taking advantage of the benefits of reservation provided to ESM for re-employment are not eligible for ESM category reservation or fee reduction
  •  However, he or she may be eligible for an ex-serviceman reservation for subsequent employment if, immediately after beginning civil employment, he or she gives a self-declaration/ undertaking to the relevant employer detailing the date-wise information of applications for various openings for which he or she had applied before beginning the initial civil employment
  • The period of “Call up Service” of an Ex-Serviceman in the Armed Forces will also be deemed as service rendered in the Armed Forces for the purpose of age relaxation
  • For any serviceman of the Union’s three Armed Forces to be recognised as an Ex-Serviceman for the aim of obtaining reservation advantages, he or she should have already obtained the status of Ex-Servicemen at the time of submitting his application for the Post/ Service, rather than by way of “dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency”, or, he should be in a position to show his/her entitlement by documentary evidence from the relevant authority
  • These candidates must also obtain the status of Ex-Serviceman within the period of one year from the closing date of receipt of applications
  • Age relaxation advantages are not applicable to sons or daughters or any other dependent of ex-servicemen
  • They should not mention ex-servicemen as their category

  • Candidates must get experience for the concerned post for which experience is required after finishing the requisite educational qualification. Internships, training, research experience, and other forms of experience earned while pursuing a degree will not be counted as experience 
  • Under Part-III (8) (v) of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning) Regulations, 2017, published in the Official Gazette dated June 23, 2017, programmes in engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, and physiotherapy, among others, are not allowed to be provided via open and distance learning mode
  • According to the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order dated 11-03-2019 in MA No. 3092/2018 in W.P. (C) No. 382/2018 titled Mukul Kumar Sharma & others Vs AICTE and others, B. Tech. degree/diploma in Engineering awarded by IGNOU to students enrolled up to the academic year 2009-10 shall be considered as valid, wherever applicable
  • Candidates who receive the call letter will have to display the relevant certificates for the verification process in the original form. The documents include provisional degree, diploma certificate, mark sheets, etc. which shall serve as evidence that the candidate has earned the minimum educational qualification on or before 01.01.2021 
  • Failing to produce the original certificates will lead to his/her candidature being rejected by the Commission
  • The candidates who are able to furnish documentary proof that the result of the qualifying examination was declared on or before the cut-off date and that he/ she was declared passed, will be deemed to have met the required educational qualification
  • The result of the said educational qualification should have been officially announced by the Board/ University by the specified date
  • Mere processing of the result by the Board/ University by the cut-off date does not fulfil the educational qualification criteria
