How Does AC Generator Implied In Producing Electricity, And Working Mechanism

The main purpose of an electric generator is to metamorphose mechanical energy into electrical energy. This makes it possible for transmission over large distances through power lines. There are predominantly two types of generators. They are Direct Current (DC) generators and Alternating Current (AC) generators. Alternating Current is abbreviated as AC. AC generators are also known by another name, alternators. Almost every generator you see today operates with AC. One of the predominant reasons to use AC for power supply is due to less energy loss and they are highly efficient compared to DC. In alternating current, the polarity is reversed at a frequency that is fixed. Input for an AC generator is supplied in the form of steam or gas turbines. The further sections will elucidate an AC generator’s working principle and mechanism to produce electric power. 

AC Generator Parts

An AC generator has two poles (North and South) in a magnetic field that is uniform. The main working AC generator parts are:

  • Field 
  • Armature 
  • Prime mover 
  • Rotors
  • Stators 
  • Slip ring 

 

The Characteristics Of Each Component Are:

 

  • Field: The field embodies q conductor cool that gets electricity from a source that generates a magnetic flux. This magnetic flux that we generated is used to cut the armature in this field. This armature produces voltage. This produced voltage from the field is the output of the AC generator.

 

  • Armature: This is an AC generator element that helps produce a voltage. The armature embodies coils of wire that are big enough to hold a generator at full-load current.

 

  • Prime mover: This element of the AC generator is responsible for driving the generator. The engines that can be used as prime movers are steam turbines, diesel engines, or sometimes even a motor.

 

  • Rotors: This element is the spinning part of the AC generator. The prime mover gives the power required to rotate the rotor in the generator.

 

  • Stators: Stators are the element of the AC generator that is stationary. It also holds on to the armature at a particular place. The core of the stator is made up of steel alloy or magnetic iron lamination. This is done to cut down Eddy’s current loss. The stator is split into three segments: 
  1. Stator frame: It is a frame that is in the exterior that holds on to the core of the stator and windings of the armature.
  2. Stator core: the function of the stator core is to minimise Eddy’s current losses as it is laminated by steel or iron. 
  3. Armature windings: these windings are bound to the core armature slots.

 

  • Slip ring: A Slip ring is an electrical connector. It is used to transfer electricity to and fro from the rotor in the generator. It is mainly used to transport electricity from a stationary device to a device that is revolving. They are made up of metal and also insulated from one another.

 

  • Brushes: Brushes keep contact between the slip rings in an AC generator. Its purpose is also to transport current from the coil of the AC generator to a load connected to the generator. Carbon brushes are used.   

Working Principle Of AC Generator

The principle of an elementary AC generator is Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction. This law says the emf, the electromotive force, is formed when a wire carrying current splits the magnetic field uniformly. The AC generator embodies a coil that spins in a magnetic field. 

 

Electromagnetic induction is governed by two of Faraday’s Laws. They are:

  • An emf is created when the magnetic flux amount that is linked with the circuit changes. This emf persists until the magnetic flux changes. 
  • The induced emf amplitude is directly proportional to the rate of magnetic flux change in a circuit. 

The Working Of AC Generator 

The armature (coil) of the AC generator is rotated in a magnetic field. This is used to produce a very strong magnetic field. Since the armature that is placed on one coil moves up along the magnetic field, an emf is produced in the same orientation (direction). As the coil continues to rotate and one side of the coil moves above and the other part of the coil moves downwards, an emf is produced that is the reverse direction. An electric current is produced through a galvanometer, slip rings, and brushes. A rule called Fleming’s right-hand rule is used to decide the direction in which the emf is induced. The same process is repeated in every cycle, and an alternating kind of emf is induced. 

The Benefits Of Using AC Generators Over Dc Generators

  • AC generators can support stepping up and down through transformers.
  • The energy losses in AC generators are much lesser when compared to DC generators.
  • AC generators are small in size.

Applications

AC generators are used in machines that require an alternating current supply. They can be used to power fans and other small appliances in homes. These generators are used to generate power from windmills and dams.
