They have received numerous recognition for their outstanding efforts in the film industry.
India and the Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscars, first crossed paths in 1957 when Mehboob Khan’s Mother India received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Since then, movies like Salaam Bombay and Lagaan have received Best Foreign Language Film nominations.

1. Bhanu Athaiya: Best Costume Design
- Between the 1950s and the 2000s, Hindi cinema’s aesthetic was influenced by the works of the great costume designer Bhanu Athaiya. She was the first Indian to receive an Oscar for the Gandhi biography directed by Richard Attenborough (1982).
- Athaiya dressed a vast number of Hollywood stars. Her most well-known movies included Amrapali, Waqt, Brahmachari, Teesri Manzil, Guide, Reshma Aur Shera, 1942: A Love Story, Lagaan, and Swades.
- Her attire mixed Indian and Western fashions and was worn by urban and rural figures. MK Gandhi and BR Ambedkar were two of the historical characters she dressed up in biopics.
2. Satyajit Ray: Honorary Award
- 1992 saw the 64th Academy Awards. Satyajit Ray received the honorary award in recognition of his exceptional skill in the field of filmmaking and his profound humanitarian vision, both of which have had a tremendous impact on filmmakers and viewers worldwide.
- The Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest cinema and civilian honours, were given to Ray in addition to his 36 wins at India’s National Film Awards.
- The Indian government has just established the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema. The nation’s various film organisations are planning centenary celebrations that will last an entire year but will have to be virtual-physical hybrids due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
3. Resul Pookutty: Best Sound Mixing
- Resul Pookutty is an Indian sound editor, mixer, and sound designer for movies. His work on Slumdog Millionaire earned him the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing.
- He has performed in films made in Hollywood, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. The 1997 Rajat Kapoor film Private Detective: Two Plus One marked Pookutty’s entry into sound design.
- His breakthrough came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly regarded 2005 picture Black. After that, he worked as a sound engineer for notable films, including Enthiran (2009), Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2010), Gandhi, My Father (2011), Zinda (2006), and Traffic Signal (2010)
4. Gulzar: Best Original Song
- At the 81st Academy Awards, Gulzar and AR Rahman received an Oscar for Jai Ho’ for Best Original Song. The lyrics were written by Gulzar, who once again showed his talent as the song went on to become a hit even in Hollywood.
- Gulzar also writes scripts, poetry, and dialogue. Gulzar has received 36 honours and accolades as of 2019, including the Rashtriya Kishore Kumar Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh for 1999–2000, 22 Filmfare Awards, and five National Film Awards.
- One Grammy Award (2010) and Academy Award (2008) for Best Original Song, 2002 Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu, 2004 Padma Bhushan, and 2013 Dadasaheb Phalke.
5. A.R Rahman : Best Original Score and Best Original Song
- Rahman is legendary in his own right. The song “Jai Ho,” written by Rahman and Gulzar, won the Best Original Song Oscar for the film Slumdog Millionaire. However, that wasn’t all, and he received a second Oscar for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire’s Best Original Score.
- Rahman first wrote music for several documentaries and jingles for commercials and Indian television networks. Beginning in the early 1990s with the Tamil film Roja, Rahman’s work as a film composer was carried out through his studio, Panchathan Record Inn.
- The comedy Couple’s Retreat (2009), which had a score by Rahman, won the BMI Award for Best Score. At the 81st Academy Awards, his score for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) won Best Original Score and Best Original Song. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, he also won Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
