The Indian Prime minister defines the dates and initiatives for the Session of parliament. He also decides whether or not the House should be prorogued or disintegrated. As chief spokesman, he announces major government policies and responds to questions.

The Prime Minister (PM) advises the consultation of many officers to the President, allocates and restructures financial stocks among Ministers, and presides over meetings of the Cabinet of Ministers, influencing their decisions. The Prime Minister has the authority to ask any representative to resign or to recommend to the President the removal of any Minister.

Narendra Damodardas Modi – Period 2014-Incumbent

As the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has been the government’s leader. He is the Lower House (Lok Sabha) leader and the chairman of the Council of Ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is India’s 14th Prime Minister. PM Modi was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014, and this is his second term. Dr Manmohan Singh – Period 2004-2014

Dr Manmohan Singh was India’s 13th Prime Minister. He has two full terms as Prime Minister and has led two United Progressive Alliance (UPA) governments. Manmohan Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, served as the upper house’s leader from 1998 to 2004. He is now in his sixth term in the Rajya Sabha. As finance minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government in 1991, he is primarily recognised for initiating India’s LPG (Liberalisation, Privatisation, Globalisation) reforms. Manmohan Singh was also the Reserve Bank of India’s 15th governor. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee – Period 1996, 1998-99, 1999-2004

Atal Bihar Vajpayee was India’s Prime Minister for three terms. He was first elected India’s 10th Prime Minister and served for 13 days. In 2014, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a popular prime minister, was awarded the highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. He coined the phrase “Jai Jawaan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyan.” Vajpayee served as the Minister of External Affairs in Morarji Desai’s cabinet and is recognised for his contributions to improving Indo-Pakistan relations. He was elected to the Lok Sabha ten times and served in the Rajya Sabha twice, from 1962-67 to 1986-91.

He was a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Sangh, which eventually became the Bharatiya Janata Party, and its first president was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During his presidency, the Pokhran 2 nuclear tests were conducted in 1988. He was born on Christmas Day, December 25, and his birthday is celebrated in India as Good Governance Day.

Inder Kumar Gujral – Period 1997-1998

I K Gujral, India’s 12th Prime Minister, participated in the Quit India Movement led by Gandhi Ji. As External Affairs Minister, he is most known for the Gujral Doctrine, a set of five principles that define India’s foreign policy with its immediate neighbours, notably Pakistan. He served in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

HD Deve Gowda – Period 1996-1997

Doddegowda Haradanahalli Deve Gowda, the 11th Indian Prime Minister, was Karnataka’s chief minister from 1994 to 1996. When no party gained enough seats to form a government, Deve Gowda was chosen as prime minister, and the United Front established the government with Congress’s backing. Deve Gowda, the national head of the Janata Dal (Secular), served in the 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabhas following his tenure as Prime Minister.

Narasimha Rao, PV – Period 1991-1996

The 10th Prime Minister, Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, was the first from southern India. Narasimha Rao was the Defence Minister from 1993 to 1996 and the External Affairs Minister from 1992 to 1994. He was also Rajiv Gandhi’s home minister in 1986. Narasimha Rao was also Andhra Pradesh’s fourth chief minister. The 1991 economic changes were implemented during his time as Prime Minister.

Chandra Shekhar – Period 1990-1991

Chandra Shekhar, India’s eighth Prime Minister, led a minority administration of a Janata Dal breakaway party with the help of Congress to postpone the election process. His government was dubbed the “lame duck” since it had the fewest party MPs. The 1991 economic crisis and Rajiv Gandhi’s murder were pivotal occurrences during his presidency.

Mr Rajiv Gandhi – Period 1984-89

Rajiv Gandhi, the son of previous Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi, served as India’s sixth Prime Minister from 1984 until 1989. He was the youngest Prime Minister of India at the time of Indira Gandhi’s murder in 1984, following the Sikh riots. Rajiv Gandhi worked as an airline pilot for Indian Airlines. He was the Congress party’s president from 1985 until 1991. His tenure was distinguished by high-profile cases such as Shah Bano, the Bhopal gas disaster, and the Bofors affair. He was 46 when an LTTE suicide bomber slewed him in 1991 and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Chaudhary  Charan Singh (1979-1980) Charan Singh was India’s sixth Prime Minister. Charan Singh, born into a peasant family in Uttar Pradesh, was a defender of peasants’ rights.

Morarji Desai – Period 1977-79

Morarji Ranchhodji Desai was India’s fourth Prime Minister. From 1952 until 1956, he was Bombay’s chief minister, divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat. He was the leader of the Janata Party’s administration.

Indira Gandhi – Period 1966-1977, 1980-1984

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, India’s third Prime Minister and the country’s first and only female Prime Minister, served the second-longest tenure as Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi was also the Minister of External Affairs (1984), the Minister of Defence (1980-1982), the Minister of Home Affairs (1970-1973), and the Minister of Information and Broadcasting (1970-1973). (1964 – 66). She declared a state of emergency in 1975 to halt elections. During her presidency, Pakistan and India fought a war to liberate East Pakistan. She was assassinated in 1986 by her bodyguard during Operation Blue Star.

Gulzarilal Nanda – Period 1964, 1966

Gulzarilal Nanda served as interim Prime Minister of India for 13 days following the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966. His previous 13-day tenure as India’s second prime minister after the death of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964.

Lal Bahadur Shastri – Period 1964-1966

Congress Representative Lal Bahadur Shastri served as India’s second prime minister. During the 1965 Indo-Pakistan conflict, he coined the phrase ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,’ which became popular, and he served as Railways Minister under Jawaharlal Nehru. His death occurred the day after the Tashkent Agreement formally ended the conflict.
