One of the most flexible musicians in the Indian film industry was Lata Mangeshkar, popularly referred to as the “Nightingale of India.” Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a traditional musician and stage performer, and Shevanti welcomed Lata into the globe on Sep 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Her father decided to teach her music at an early age. Lata began acting in plays that her father had composed by the time she was five. Asha, Meena, Usha, and Hridaynath, four of her brothers, are also outstanding musicians and artists.
Lata Mangeshkar provided the soulful voice for many Cinemas leading ladies across the period of her career that lasted close to eight decades. She provided the music for more than 5,000 songs in more than 1,000 Hindi and 36 regional cinemas. Lata has been pushing the limits of music since 1942 with her astounding skills. Lata has produced songs for celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra and Madhubala. She produced various songs but is most recognized for her versatile voice (ghazals, pop, etc.)
Lata Mangeshkar's musical career
She was charged with caring for the family after her father’s sudden death in 1942. The Mangeshkar relatives were taken care of by Pandit Deenanath’s friend Master Vinayak, who also granted her a part in the movie Badi Maa. She moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1949, when she began training with Ustad Aman Ali Khan in Hindustani classical music.
Lata partnered with many great music composers, such as R D Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, and A R Rahman. For 1960s movies like L Naina Barse Rim Jhim, lag Jaa Gale, and Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha etc.
Bengali Career
Lata Mangeshkar has recorded 185 Bengali compositions during her professional life. She began her public appearance in 1956 with Hemant Kumar’s song “Prem Ekbari Esechilo Nairobi.” It grew to be a beloved success.
She released “Rangila Banshite,” which would have been likewise acclaimed, in the same year. She had moderate success with Salil Chaudhry’s works in the late 1950s.
She performed “Akash Pradip Jole” in 1960, which continues to be a big success today. She sang several popular songs by Hemant Kumar, Sudhin Dasgupta, and Chowdhry in the mid-1960s.
S D Burman Songs
Lata sang the first and last tracks produced by R. D. Burman, Kuch Na Kaho in 1942: A Love Story (1994), and Chote Nawab (1961). Blockbuster tracks like Luka Chupi in Rang de Basanti (2006) & O Paalanhaare in the film Lagaan were produced as an outcome of her work with A R Rahman (2001).
Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh, Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya from Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Rangeela Re from Prem Pujari (1970), Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960), and even Jiya Jale in Dil Se are just a few of the iconic songs to which the vocalist has lent her voice throughout the years.
Lata Mangeshkar established her private record company, LM Music, in 2012. Her previous single, Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki, a tribute to the Indian army and India, was issued in Mar 2019. It was composed by Mayuresh Pai.
Trophies and Acknowledgments
Over her career, Lata Mangeshkar gained numerous awards and medals. She debuted in the Royal Albert Hall for the very first time in 1974. Three Motion Picture Awards, 15 Bengal Cinema Journalists’ Society Awards, four Bollywood Best Female Reproduction Awards, two Bollywood Special Awards, the Bollywood Award Winner, and numerous other honours have been conferred upon her. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was presented to Lata Mangeshkar in 1989. She earned the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest honour, in 2001. In 2007, she earned the Knight of the Legion of Award, the highest honour honorary title by the French government.
Along with this, Lata Mangeshkar was acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1974 as possessing the most performances in the history of Indian culture. On her 90th birthday in Sept 2019, she obtained the daughter of the Nation award from the Indian government.
The book “Lata Mangeshkar: A Music Journey” recounts the story of her life in music, her difficulties, her triumphs, and her tenure as the Monarch of Bollywood music from the 1940s to the present day while integrating little-known information.
Lata Mangeshkar reported lung problems and was sent to the Resnick Candy Hospital in Mumbai on November 11, 2019.
Lata Mangeshkar, a legendary vocalist, passed away on February 6, 2022. She passed away in the Resnick Candy Hospitals in Mumbai (Sunday). She was 92.
