Force and Pressure

Let us learn about what exactly is force and pressure, their properties, scientific units, and how the force and the pressure differ from each other. Also, study laws of force and pressure.

Table of Content
  •

Whenever we want to talk about a push experienced by something, we use force and pressure interchangeably. However, force and pressure don’t mean the same thing. They are both pushed on some kind, but they are two different terms and have different definitions in science.

When two objects interact, the effect that is produced and which tries to change the states of these objects is called the force. Pressure is kind of a force. Pressure is a force acting upon a particular area, and pressure is perpendicular to the direction of the object’s surface.

Pressure and Force

We often confuse the terms force and pressure as the same thing. However, in scientific terms, they are quite different from each other. The units, formulas, and definitions for force and pressure are different from each other.

Force is an impact. Force is the effect one object has on another object when two objects are interacting with each other. While pressure measures how much force is acting upon a specific surface area of the object. Pressure usually acts in a perpendicular direction relative to the direction of the surface of the object.

Force

Force is a pull or a push that makes an object change either its state or the direction of its motion. For example, when force is applied on a ball that is stationary, it is set into motion.

In scientific terms, force is a vector quantity. Force can be defined as the product of the mass of an object and the acceleration of that object.

Force is directly proportional to the mass and the acceleration of the object. Force is defined by Newton’s second law of motion.Force is required to maintain any motion. The motion of the earth around the sun is maintained by the force of gravity between the earth and the sun.

Pressure

Pressure is the precise measurement of the force. It is the physical quantity that defines how much force is applied at a particular surface area of the object. The direction of the pressure is perpendicular to the surface of the object.

Pressure is measured by dividing the total force applied by the total surface area of the object upon which the force is applied. Pressure is directly proportional to the force, while it is inversely proportional to the surface area. This means when force increases, pressure increases, and when surface area increases, the pressure decreases.

Differences between the force and the pressure

The force and the pressure are related to each other and depend on each other. However, there are ways in which these two physical quantities differ. Let’s take a look at them.

Definition

  • By definition, force is the impact produced when two objects interact with each other, force changes the motion or shape of those objects
  • By definition, pressure is the measured force that acts upon a particular surface area perpendicular to the surface of that object

Symbol and Unit

  • The unit of force is Newton, it’s represented by the symbol N
  • The unit of pressure is Pascal, and it is represented by the symbol Pa

Instrument for Measurement

  • In order to measure force upon an object, you need to make use of a dynamometer
  • Pressure on an object can be measured by using a manometer

Areas acted upon

  • Force can act upon sides, edges, and faces as well as the vertices of an object
  • Pressure can only act upon the face and the surface of the object

Type of Quantity

  • Force is a physical quantity as it has direction as well as magnitude
  • The direction of force plays a very important role while determining the motion of an object, hence, force is a vector quantity
  • Pressure only has a magnitude and not a direction as pressure is only measured in a perpendicular direction to the surface of the body, hence, pressure is a scalar quantity

Change in Velocity

  • The change in force can also make a change in the velocity of an object as velocity depends on the direction of the motion
  • Change in pressure does not have any impact upon the velocity of an object since pressure is a vector quantity with no direction

These are points of difference between the force and the pressure.

Conclusion

A push or pull experienced by a body can be force or pressure. However, force and pressure are quite different from one another.Force is a vector quantity. Pressure is a scalar quantity. Force changes the Velocity of an object while pressure has no impact on the Velocity of an object.

The unit of force is Newton, while the unit of pressure is Pascal. Force can be measured by a dynamometer, while pressure is measured with the help of a manometer.

Force is the product of acceleration and the mass of the body, while pressure is forced upon surface area.

Answer : Pressure and force are two different terms in science, but they are closely related to each other. Force is impacted upon the interaction between two objects. While pressure measures how much force is applied within a certain surface area of an object in the perpendicular direction.

Answer : No, even though the pressure is the measure of force in a particular area, different units and instruments are used.

Force is measured in Newton, while pressure is measured in Pascal. A dynamometer is used to measure force, while a manometer is used to measure pressure.

Answer :Change in pressure does not have any impact on the Velocity of an object. However, a change in force will most probably cause a change in the Velocity of that object.

Answer :The direction of force can be anything. Since it’s the measure of impact on the interaction of two objects with each other, the direction is not fixed here.

However, pressure is always perpendicular to the surface of the object. There is no change in direction.
