Project 17A: INS Vindhyagiri and Mahendragiri

Recently, President Droupadi Murmu launched the ship 'Vindhyagiri' at the dock on the banks of the river Hooghly in Kolkata. Recently, the seventh ship of the Project 17A frigates series developed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (Mumbai) was launched.

Stealth guided-missile frigates: These missile ships are built with a stealthy design that includes radar-absorbing coatings, making them hard for enemies to detect when they approach.

Project 17A:

  • Project 17 Alpha frigates (P-17A) were launched by the Indian Navy in 2019 to construct a series of stealth guided-missile frigates.
  • These are currently being constructed by two companies in India – Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
  • The five ships – INS Nilgiri, Udaygiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, and Dunagiri – were launched between 2019 and 2022.

INS Vindhyagiri (Built at GRSE, Kolkata):

  • It is the sixth ship of the Project 17A Frigates.
  • Recently, President Droupadi Murmu launched the ship ‘Vindhyagiri’ at the dock on the banks of the river Hooghly in Kolkata.
  • The ship derives its name from the ‘Vindhya’ ranges in Karnataka.

Mahendragiri : 

  • Recently, the seventh ship of the Project 17A frigates series developed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (Mumbai) was launched.
  • It is named after a mountain peak in Eastern Ghats located in the state of Odisha.
