UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register: 15 May 2024

Why in news?

  • Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra and Sahṛdayāloka-Locana have been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register.
  • The 10th General Meeting of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP), held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

 

About Memory of the World Program:

  • 1992: Launched by UNESCO.
  • Objective: to safeguard the documentary heritage of humanity against neglect, decay over time and climatic conditions, as well as deliberate destruction.
  • 1998: For  Asia Pacific region, a specific branch called the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) was established.

 

Ramcharitmanas

  • Composed by Tulsidas.
  • Epic Poem in Awadhi.
  • It  is  a poetic retelling of the events of the  epic Ramayana by Valmiki.

Panchatantra

  • By Vishnu Sharma.
  • It is an ancient Indian collection of interrelated animal fables in Sanskrit verse and prose, arranged within a frame story.

Sahṛdayāloka-Locana

  • By Acharya Anandvardhan.
  • It is a Sanskrit commentary on the Dhvanyaloka, a foundational text in Indian literary theory written by Anandavardhana.
