Kutch Ajrak gets GI Tag: 6 May 2024

The traditional artisans of Kutch Ajrakh from Kutch have been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Why in news?

China launches lunar probe mission to collect samples for the first time from the far side of the moon. 

About the Mission: 

  • This is the world’s first mission to bring rocks from Moon’s far side.
  • It is targeting a landing in the southern portion of the Apollo crater, located within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin on the lunar far side.
  • It will carry scientific instruments from France, Italy, Sweden, and Pakistan.
  • It also carries a Pakistani satellite called the “ICUBE-QAMAR cubesat”.

Objective: 

  • to collect around 2 kg of material from 2 m below the lunar surface and return it to Earth for analysis.

Significance:

  • It could provide valuable insights into the Moon’s mantle composition, which scientists have yet to determine.
  • It could also help explain the differences in composition between the near and far sides of the Moon.
