Why in news?

ISRO  successfully conducted a hot test of a liquid rocket engine created with Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology also known in common language as 3D printing.

More about news

  • The engine tested is the PS4 engine used in the Reaction Control System (RCS) of the of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • The new engine  saves 97 per cent of raw materials and reduces production time by 60 per cent.

About Hot Test

  • It is a  production test used to check all the engine operating parameters as they would function real-time in an actual vehicle.

About Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)

  • It is a process that deposits materials layer by layer to create geometric 3D objects.
  • It is done  in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, with the material being added together, typically layer by layer.
