First Ever Nuclear Energy Summit at Brussels, Belgium : 22 Mar 2024

About Nuclear Energy Summit:

  • Co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi.
  • It is held  after the inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023.
  •  COP28 called for accelerating  deployment of nuclear energy along with other low carbon energy sources.
  • It provides participating countries the opportunity in reaching net zero and promoting sustainable development.

Countries which signed declaration:  Argentina, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, UK, and the USA.

Declaration of the Summit:

  • To use nuclear energy as a key component of a global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from both power and industrial sectors. 
  • Ensure energy security and promote long-term sustainable development and clean energy transition.
  • Finance the lifetime extension of existing nuclear reactors, the construction of new nuclear power plants.
  • Encouraging technological innovation for nuclear power plants.
  • Creating a fair and open global market environment for nuclear power development.
