Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary & Amrabad Tiger Reserve: 29 Mar 2024

About Eturnagaram Wildlife  Sanctuary: 

    • Located  in Mulugu district in Telangana,   near the Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Telangana borders.
    • 1952:  The erstwhile Hyderabad Government declared it as a sanctuary because of its rich biodiversity.
    • The Godavari and  Dayyam Vagu river passes through the sanctuary.
    • The biennial festival of Sammakka Saralamma Jatara is held in the sanctuary.
  • Flora: tropical dry deciduous type of teak  like thiruman, maddi, and bamboo, madhuca, terminalia, and pterocarpus.
  • Fauna: Tiger, Leopard, Wolf, Dholes, Golden jackals, Sloth bear, and Indian giant squirrels.

Sammakka Saralamma Jatara (also Sammakka Sarakka Jatara): 

  • It is a festival to honour the Hindu Tribal goddesses, celebrated in the state of Telangana, India. 
  • This Jatara is known for witnessing one of the largest human gatherings in the world. 
  • The rituals related to the Goddesses are entirely performed by the Koya Tribe priests, in accordance with Koya customs and traditions.

Amrabad Tiger Reserve:

  • Situated on the border of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, encompassing parts of the Nallamala Hills.
  • It is one of the largest tiger reserves in the country.
  • It has a large presence of the Chenchu tribe.
  • Fauna: Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian gaurs, and several species of birds and reptiles.

Why in news?

  • Eturnagaram Wildlife  Sanctuary  and Amrabad Tiger Reserve are facing situation of forest fires.
