Centre’s pact with Tripura govt and TIPRA Motha : 12 Mar 2024

About The Tipra Motha Party:
  • The Tipra Motha Party is also known as the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance.
  • It is currently the second largest party in Tripura Legislative Assembly.

Agreement Between Centre, Tripura Government, and TIPRA Motha:

  • Signed on March 2, 2024
  • Ended Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma’s fast-unto-death and facilitated TIPRA Motha’s joining with the BJP government in Tripura.

Demands of TIPRA Motha:

  • Greater Tipraland: A separate state for Tripura’s tribals.
  • More powers for the TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) including direct funding, police force, and revenue share from gas exploration.
  • Roman script as the official script for the Kokborok language.

Contents of the Accord:

  • Resolution of issues related to indigenous people of Tripura regarding history, land, rights, economic development, identity, culture, and language.
  • Formation of a joint working group to implement agreed points in a time-bound manner.
  • Stakeholders agreed to refrain from protests/agitations post-agreement.

Why in News:

  • Recently, the Central government  signed a pact with the Tripura government and TIPRA Motha.
