Why in news?
- Road Transport and Highway Ministry announced a pilot project for cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for road accident victims in Chandigarh.
- The aim is to provide timely medical care, including during the critical golden hour (The first hour after the trauma is called the ‘golden hour’) following accidents.
Entitlement and Duration:
- Victims can receive cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh per person for a maximum of seven days post-accident.
- Applicable to victims of road accidents involving any type of motor vehicle.
Treatment Coverage:
- Trauma and polytrauma treatment packages under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will also be included.
- Hospitals can claim reimbursement from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund for treatment provided.
Golden Hour Importance:
- Golden hour is crucial following an injury to prevent death by providing prompt medical care.
- Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 2019 emphasizes the significance of timely medical intervention during this period.
Implementation and Coordination:
- National Health Authority will implement the scheme, coordinating with police, hospitals, and State Health Agency.
- Scheme aims to establish an ecosystem for efficient and effective medical care for road accident victims.
