Why in News?

  • A landslide has occurred at the site of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project, affecting the flow of the Subansiri River downstream.

 

About the Subansiri River:

  • Trans-Himalayan River; a Brahmaputra tributary.
  • Flows through Tibet and the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
  • Measures approximately 518 km with a 32,640 sq km basin.
  • Contributes 7.92% of Brahmaputra’s total flow.

 

About the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP):

  • Under-construction gravity dam on the Subansiri River.
  • Run-of-the-river project by NHPC Limited, with a 2000 MW capacity.
  • Construction started in 2005, delayed by landslides, redesign, and opposition.
  • Resumed in 2019 after NGT clearance, operational start expected by March 2024.
  • Slated to be India’s largest hydroelectric project upon completion.
