Why in news?
According to the Health Ministry, all cases of organ transplants must be assigned a unique National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO)-ID for both the donor and the recipient.
More about news:
- The directive is applicable in both cases whether organ transplantation is from from living or deceased donors.
- Objective: to eliminate commercial dealings in organs, especially those involving foreign citizens.
About National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO):
- It is set up under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
- Functions:
- procurement and distribution of organs and tissues.
- registry of organs, tissue donation and transplantation in the country.
- It has two divisions:
- National Human Organ and Tissue Removal and Storage Network.
- National Biomaterial Centre (National Tissue Bank).
