Supreme Court of India: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit appointed 49th CJI

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, the senior-most Supreme Court justice, was named Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday. On August 27, 2022, Justice Lalit will become India’s 49th Chief Justice. After barely 74 days in the job, Justice Lalit will succeed retiring Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on November 8.

  • On November 8 of this year, Justice Lalit is scheduled to retire.
