Sikkim Government hikes minimum wage by 67%

The government of Sikkim increased the daily wage for unskilled employees by 67%, to Rs 500. Read this article to know more.

On Wednesday, the government of Sikkim increased the minimum pay for unskilled employees to Rs 500, marking a 67% increase over the previous figure. According to statements made by Labour Minister of Sikkim  Lok Nath Sharma, the daily salary for unskilled employees is Rs 500 from Rs 300 was implemented with retroactive effect as of 11th July 2022.

With retroactive effect dating back to the 11th of  2022, the State government has raised the minimum daily payout of skilled and unskilled workers by 67%.

The Rise in Wages

The daily wages for the unskilled employees have risen to Rs. 500. An increment of Rs.200 has been done on the previous wage that was Rs.300. The same increment of Rs. 200 is done for workers with semi-skilled, and the raised amount is Rs. 520 which was Rs. 320, previously. The daily pay for skilled workers jumped to Rs. 535 from Rs. 335. The workers who are highly trained received a hike of Rs. 200 and will now get Rs. 565.

Workers at altitudes between 8,001 and 12,000 ft will get 50% more than the standard rate of pay, those between 12,001 and 16,000 ft will receive 75% more than the standard rate of pay, and those working at heights exceeding 16,000 ft would receive twice the regular rate of pay.

At a news conference held at Shram Bhawan on 13th September, The Minister of Labour Lok Nath Sharma announced that the Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Golay authorised the adjustment, and the Department has entered with a notice of a 67% jump in daily pay, which is highest.

Sikkim has the third-highest minimum wage among the states

After the declaration made on 1st May by the Chief Minister, He said that the Department decided to increase the minimum wages. On 11th July, the Department published a gazette notice. It provides a time of around sixty days for the stockholders to give suggestions or raise objections if any.

The Department had received a total of 14 representations, each of which was given with careful consideration. Following that, the Department handed over its report to the government so that it could be reviewed and approved.

More Announcements

One more announcement was demonstrated during the conference, and that was the SKM administration, which is now in power, has pledged to increase the minimum wage in the year  2019 agenda, which was the driving force behind the demonstrations. According to Sharma, Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr. Prem Singh Tamang met with the minister of  Labour Rameswar Teli in Mintokgang, and Teli told Tamang that the Central Government would be constructing a hospital with 100-beds  for ESIC recipients also. The government of Sikkim is working in every aspect to soothe the life of the labourers or the people of the state. The increased wages of the workers will motivate them to work with efficiency, and it directly or indirectly will surely add perks to the growth rate of the economy of the state.
