At Mullanpur, Mohali in Chandigarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, which has a facility of 300-beds. Tata Memorial Centre, an institute under the Atomic Energy Union Department, constructed the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre for more than 650 Crore.
During the opening ceremony of the Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was present. Many others were at the event, including Punjab Governor B.L. Purohit, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, and Congress MP Manish Tewari from Anandpur Sahib.

About Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital
Homi Bhabha cancer centre offers world-class facilities to ensure high-class treatment for all types of cancer. The facilities available at this hospital are Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Brachytherapy, and Digital Radiography.
The hospital is equipped with all modern facilities that enable it to treat cancer in all forms. It uses a variety of treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplants, etc.
In addition to treating patients from Punjab, the hospital will serve patients from Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand.

At the opening ceremony of Homi Bhabha cancer hospital on 24th August 2022, Prime Minister Modi addressed the gatherings with the following points:
- India’s efforts to improve healthcare facilities and provide utmost healthcare to the below-poverty-line people. Saying a sound health care system does not simply consist of four walls; it is always better to prevent than cure.
- There has been a growing emphasis on holistic health care in the last eight years. And more progressive work has been done in these medical fields than in the previous seven decades.
Mr. Modi addressed cancer patients and their families, saying, “We shouldn’t be scared of cancer, but we should fight it.” “Cancer has been defeated by many people I know”, added Mr. Modi.
- A total of 1.50 lakh health centres are planned to be built in the country, out of which 1.25 lakh have been established already.
- 3,000 health and wellness centres in Punjab are already giving their services to the people. He said many patients come to Chandigarh’s PGIMER from Himachal Pradesh for treatment.
- There is now an extensive cancer treatment facility in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur, where an AIIMS was built.
- Also, PM Mr. Modi said the country has long aspired for a health care system that provides affordable treatment, prevents illness, and cares for the poor.

Government Schemes to Develop Healthcare
Under the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Scheme, 3.5 crore people from many cities have received treatment for their health problems, and the cost of the treatment was 40,000 crores. Approximately Rs 64,000 crore is being spent by the government on the Ayushman Bharat health infrastructure mission.
It has been estimated that over 5 lakh Ayush doctors have been recognised along with allopathic doctors. Jan Aushadhi centres provide over 500 cancer drugs at cheap rates, saving nearly Rs 1,000 crores out of the patient costs.
A total of 40 cancer hospitals have been established, and most are already operating. Compared to the 400 medical colleges that existed before 2014, around 200 new medical colleges have opened in the past eight years.
In addition, the government is working on six aspects to provide good health care for the needy and poor. They are,
- To promote preventive health care
- To open small and modern hospitals in all the villages in India
- Setting up research centres along with medical colleges in all the cities
- Adding new doctors and paramedical staff
- Providing treatments and medicines at an affordable rate
- Introducing new medical technologies
Also, to implement the six aspects mentioned above, the government is spending thousands of crores on them.
Doctors and society need to recognise the psychological burden that cancer patients carry. We will be able to defeat cancer with the help of collective efforts, PM Modi said. Also, health care will undergo revolutionary changes with the launch of 5G telecom services in the country.

Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inaugurating Punjab Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. He said, in areas like Malwa, in Punjab, where cancer is prevalent, the hospital will help in the fight against cancer. On 5th January, during the tenure of the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government, Mann regretted the cancellation of the PM’s visit to Ferozepur.
The Prime Minister has dedicated the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and a Research Centre to the nation. This hospital is located at Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, Ajit Singh Nagar District, Mohali. The aim of opening this hospital is to provide cancer care treatments to Punjab and its surrounding states.
Following the opening of the Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, Haryana, Modi arrived in Chandigarh to improve access to modern medical facilities in the National Capital Region. With 2,600 beds, the super-specialty hospital will be managed by the math of Mata Amritanandamayi.
