India’s First Multimodal Logistics Park

The government proposed to build 35 MMLPs at strategic locations.

Why in the News?

Recently, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) awarded project to make India’s first multimodal logistics park in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Key Points:

  • It is one of the several flagship projects announced under the Bharatmala Project of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), which envisions the building of 35 such MMLPs.

About Multi Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP):

  • It forms a key policy initiative of the Government of India, which is aimed at improving the freight logistics sector.

  • It will integrate multiple modes of freight transport through highways, railways & inland waterways.
  • Developed under a ‘Hub & Spoke’ model.
  • Objective:  To centralize freight consolidation and reduce logistics costs.
