About The Match
A six-wicket win for Sri Lanka has put Rohit Sharma & Co on the brink of eviction from the series. Taking over the match for India after Rohit Sharma’s 41-ball 72 helped them to 173/7, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis put on 97 runs for the first wicket. Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa ensured no hiccup in the end, although Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin led India’s fightback. With one ball left to play, they won.
The Sri Lankans looked effortless as they chased a target of 174. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis scored a record-breaking 97 runs during the opening partnership. Sri Lanka recorded its highest partnership against India in their T20I series. As a result, Nissanka scored a 37-ball 52 with four fours and two sixes in a fast-paced inning.
A comeback was made by India, however. The 12th over of the innings was finished by Yuzvendra Chahal when he removed Nissanka and Charith Assalanka. Similarly, Rohit Sharma dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka shortly after his Ravichandran Ashwin gamble paid off. Chahal removed Kusal Mendis in his final over, who had smashed 57 off 37 balls. There were four fours and three sixes in his knock.
That was the end of India’s fight, however. Both Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka did exactly what was required of them and scored correctly. Sri Lanka was able to finish with a ball to spare thanks to an unbeaten 64-run partnership off 34 balls. Rajapaksa remained unbeaten with a 25-ball 17 in his hat trick, while Shanaka scored 33 off 18 balls.
However, despite Chahal-Ashwin’s bowling, India was again halted by the two experienced pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya. The crucial 19th over was bowled by Bhuvneshwar, but he conceded 14 runs without scoring a run. He conceded only 30 runs in his four-over spell, but he did not succeed in grabbing a wicket.
It was another off-colour performance from Hardik Pandya, who conceded 35 without scoring. The last over was bowled brilliantly by Arshdeep Singh, conceding only six runs, but he was fairly ordinary with the bat. In his 3.5 overs, he did not take a wicket but conceded 40 runs. As he took three wickets for 34 runs, Yuzvendra Chahal appeared in good form. The 32-run haul by Ashwin marked his return to the action after warming the bench for the last three games.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were dismissed within the first three overs of India’s innings earlier in the day. There was a lot of blame for Rahul’s and Kohli’s poor shot selection. While Rahul scored 7-ball 6, Kohli was cleaned up by Dilshan Madushanka for a four-ball duck in the third match.
India’s fightback was led, however, by Rohit Sharma. With only one half-century to his name in 2022, the Indian captain finally made the most of his opportunity. Despite losing two early wickets, Rohit continued to hit some brilliant shots. As a result, India reached 110 in 12.2 overs with 97 runs added by Suryakumar Yadav.
Suryakumar Yadav failed to provide Rohit with the same support while Rohit scored a brilliant 72 off 41 balls at a strike rate of 175.61. This was the fourth batter’s best performance, as he scored 29 off 34 balls. He had just one four and & one six. Rohit’s five fours and four sixes constituted the majority of the attack.
Following Rohit’s dismissal, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant could not capitalise on the momentum India had built. The 13-ball 17 scores of Hardik and Rishabh were identical. As Deepak Hooda, who failed against Pakistan in the last match, got another chance, he threw away his wicket for a four-ball three. India might have fallen far behind their target without Ashwin’s 7-ball 15. A total of 173/7 was the final result for India.
After the game, Rohit Sharma stated that India fell 10-15 runs behind and could not maximise on his knock.
