India Joins Mangrove Alliance For Climate at COP27

Why in the News?

India has joined the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.

About Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC):

    • MAC is an intergovernmental alliance that seeks to expand and hasten the progress toward the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems. 
    • Member: India, Australia, Japan, Spain, and Sri Lanka.
  • Significance: 
    • Raise global awareness about the role of mangroves as a nature-based climate change solution. 
    • Ensure the rehabilitation of mangrove forests on a global level.

About Mangroves 

    • Mangroves are salt-tolerant plant communities serving as a transition between marine and terrestrial environments. 
    • They are found in tropical and sub-tropical intertidal regions 
  • Conditions:
        • High Rainfall (between 1,000 to 3,000 mm), 
        • temperature range (26OC-35OC) and calm water with sufficient sediments to set down roots. Provide a wide range of ecosystem services
  • Significance of Mangrove Forest: 
    • Protects coastal erosion 
    • Sequesters carbon
    • Act as a buffer for ocean acidification
