IBM And IIT Madras Collaborate to Promote Quantum Computing In India

IBM and IIT Madras are working together: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras), with International Business Machines (IBM) have collaborated to advance talent development and quantum computing in India. Through this partnership, IIT Madras joined the IBM Quantum Network’s membership of approximately 180 organisations. As the “first Indian university,” IIT Madras joins a worldwide network of five-hundred firms, start-ups, major universities, and research laboratories that use IBM Quantum technologies to advance quantum computing and examine commercial use cases.

“The collaboration will expand new avenues for collaboration with industry partners to speed up research, make quantum genuine in areas like life-saving drugs, advancements in supply chains, logistics, and financial data modelling,” said Sandip Patel, MD, IBM India, at a recent media briefing in Mumbai.

About International Business Machines

Leading American computer maker IBM holds a big market proportion nationally and globally. It’s a corporate company in New York. The Computing Company, which made punch-card tabulators and other office equipment, was formed in 1911 by merging three smaller companies. Thomas Watson was the organisation’s manager when it adopted its name in 1924. Watson turned the then-struggling firm into the nation’s best punching-card tabulating device manufacturer by both private and public sector organisations.

Since 2000, IBM has routinely ranked one of their supercomputers towards the top of the list of the most powerful machines in the sector as determined by objective computing tests. In addition to building supercomputers for big businesses and governments, IBM’s supercomputer group created the Cell Broadband Processor in collaboration with the Corporation and the Sony Corp of Japan. This cutting-edge computer chip, made over a 4years  period beginning in 2001, has several uses, including supercomputers, Toshiba high-definition televisions, and the Sony Playstation 3 video game console.

About the IIT Madras

The Government of India founded the Indian Institute of Technology in 1959 as an “Institute of National Importance.” The Institute’s operations in Technology and Science are carried out by 16 academic departments and many advanced multidisciplinary research academic centres. Graduate and undergraduate programmes at the Institute lead to a Bachelor of technology., M.Sc., M.B.A., M.Tech., Master of science, and PhD degrees in various disciplines. The IITM is a residential institute with around 600 faculty members and 9,500 students. There are students from 18 different nations enrolled here. With strong academic support and the IITM Incubation Cell, IITM supports an active entrepreneurial culture.

Certified as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) in 2019, IITM was placed first in the ‘Overall’ Category in the India Ranking 2022 announced by the National Institution Ranking Framework, Ministry of Education, Government of India. From 2016 to 2022, the Institute was also placed first in the category of ‘Engineering Institutions’ in the same Rankings. It was also named the country’s “Top Innovative Institution” in the Atal Rating of Institutions in Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) for 2019, 2020, and 2021. The Innovations Cell of the Education Ministry launched the ARIIA Ranking.

IBM and IIT Madras collaboration

  • The alliance will create new chances for corporate partners and researchers to work together to advance research and bring quantum facts in various fields, including supply chain optimisation and the analysis of financial information.
  • The combined research on quantum computing will be helpful in finance, materials science, energy, chemistry, optimisation, and deep learning.
  • IIT Madras may use the cloud to access IBM’s top computing systems through the agreement.
  • The CQICC (Centre for Quantum Information, Communication and Computing) at IIT Madras would be using IBM Quantum services and the open-source Qiskit system to research issues such as quantum computation in order to develop quantum computing in the country.
  • IIT Madras’  (CQuICC) would use IBM Quantum assistance and the accessible Qiskit system to research subjects like quantum machine learning to develop and broaden the computational complexity in every state.

Benefits Of IBM and IIT Madras collaboration

  • The partnership will offer new opportunities to collaborate with business partners to speed up research and make quantum accuracy in sectors, including bettering supply chains, logistics, and the analysis of financial information.
  • IIT Madras joins the IBM Quantum Network’s global membership of over 180 organisations through this agreement.
  • The collaboration enables IIT Madras to access IBM’s cutting-edge quantum computing devices through the cloud.
  • The professors and students will access the systems, tools, and learning materials they require from IBM.
  • Before efficiently running applications on a large scale on quantum devices, Qiskit Runtime would be a system software that runs on IBM Cloud.
  • In fields of teaching and research, including machine intelligence and machine learning, IBM and IIT Madras have a long-standing partnership.
  • Over ten thousand people registered for a diploma on computing that IBM Quantum & IIT Madras jointly presented in August of last year on their online platform.
