A little while ago, the Union Cabinet chaired by honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi made it official by signing Guarantees to host the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under-17 Women’s World Cup, 2022 in India. It is the seventh edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.  

This iconic event is the annual international women’s youth football championship. The Under-17 national teams of the members of the FIFA association contest against each other for the FIFA tournament trophy which in turn leads to global recognition of the women’s team. 

The championship has been up and running since its inception in 2008, but due to the global pandemic, the 2020 Under-17 FIFA Women’s World cup was cancelled. In 2022, it is being hosted by India, for which the venues, tournament dates, and timings have been published on the official FIFA website.

FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, Starts October 11

The FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, is all set to be hosted in India with major host states being Goa, Mumbai, and Bhubaneswar. The world cup will start on 11th October 2022, with three group matches being held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. This prestigious tournament comes as great news for India, as it is the second time that India is hosting a FIFA event. 

The FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup semi-finals will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa and the final match will take place in DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. There will be a total of sixteen women’s football teams, each national team is also an active federation member of the FIFA association. For all the thirty-two football matches, the teams will be further divided into four groups from A to D for the convenience of scheduling the ten-day tournament. 

The opening day of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup will witness a group campaign between the host country India and the United States. The spectators and the viewers will also see other countries like Morocco, Chile, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria, and New Zealand in action on the very first day. 

Odisha CM Launches Host City Logo

On Saturday, 10th September 2022, the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik released the host city logo of Odisha state for the forthcoming FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, 2022. Apart from Goa and Maharashtra, Bhubaneswar in Odisha is one of the hosts of the football tournament matches. Since it is the first time that India and particularly Odisha is hosting a FIFA event, the excitement in the air can be anticipated with the logo launch event. 

At the launch event, Mr. Patnaik requested the presence of the local public at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, where the first football match will be hosted. Expressing his gladness, the Chief Minister said, “Odisha is emerging as a leading sports destination, and hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 is a momentous opportunity for our state.” He further added, “We are excited to host the best young female footballers from across the world and especially, the Indian team who will be playing all their group stage games at the Kalinga Stadium.” 

India Will Turn Into Hotspot For Women’s Football

Ashalata Devi, current captain of the Indian Women’s Football team gave an exclusive interview just before the forthcoming FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup stating that she firmly believes that India will soon turn into the global hotspot for women’s football. She also mentioned some of the issues that still exist in India regarding women’s sportsmanship and representation in the world of football. 

She mentioned that many citizens in India are unaware of what exactly is women’s football and its global significance. Given the fact that this tournament is covered by media on a larger platform and will be telecasted worldwide on television, the people in different states of the nation will finally come to know how far the Indian women’s football team has covered the distance of patriarchy. She also quotes that this world cup tournament is a blessing for Indian Women’s football team players and people that aspire to join it. 

The captain, Ashalata Devi also expressed a heartfelt message to the citizens of India, that the women’s world cup needs support and viewership to boost the morals of the youth players.
