 Recently, the Emissions Gap Report, 2022 has been released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Key Highlights of Emission Gap Report 2022:

  • Countries need to take significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions ahead of COP 27.
  • It assesses the gap between the pledges taken by different countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Nationally Determined Contributions taken by countries are insufficient to achieve predicted 2030 emissions.
  • The Global temperature is expected to rise by 2.8°C by the end of this century.
  • GHG emissions must be reduced by 45 percent by 2030 to achieve the Paris Agreement goals
  • Collectively, G20 members are responsible for 75 percent of global GHG emissions.
  •  It also tells that the global transformation to a low-carbon economy would require 4 to 6 trillion USD in investment each year.
  • It emphasized transformative solutions across sectors, including food systems.
