History of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
The decision to observe Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was made in line with the suggestions made by the L. M. Singhvi-led High-Level Committee (HLC) on the Indian community, which was established by the Indian government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the country’s then-prime minister, accepted the Committee’s recommendation during a public event on January 8, 2002, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, and on 9th January 2002, he declared the “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” (PBD).
Since 2003, the day has been celebrated, and up until 2015, it was an annual event. A concept called Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) was launched in 2009 and allows those with Indian heritage and their domestic partners to work and reside permanently in India. “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat” served as the subject of the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.
Importance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
The importance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas lies in the fact that it not only reconnects NRIs with their roots but also honours their achievements. It recognizes the challenges that Indian expatriate employees encounter while they live and work overseas. The day serves as a forum for building an international network of NRIs and connecting the youth of today with immigrants.
