Every year on September 15, the National Engineers Day commemorates the anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, among the nation’s top engineers.
It is a day to honour and recognise all engineers who have contributed significantly to the country’s growth and development. It was in 1968 that the government recognised M Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary as the National Engineers Day.
M Visvesvaraya, popularly considered the Father of Modern Mysore, was brought into existence on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the Institution of Madras before studying Civil Engineering at the Science College in Pune. Among his significant accomplishments is the construction of the famed Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dams in Mysore, the installation of the Deccan Plateau irrigation system, the flood prevention system in Hyderabad, and the planning of the route between Tirupati and Tirumala.

On Sept 15, 1861, Mokshagundam was born in Mysore. Later, he enrolled in the University of Chennai to get a BA degree. After that, he decided to change careers, and at the Science College in Pune, he took a degree as a civil engineer. Block systems are credited to Sir MV for invention. To improve the supply level & storage, he developed and set up irrigation with water gates at a (waterbody) reservoir close to Pune.
About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya
Sir Mokshagundam took birth in Mysore on 15 September 1861. After that, he switched jobs and graduated from Pune’s Science College with a certificate in civil engineering. He received the “Bharat Ratna” in 1955 in recognition of his remarkable contribution to India’s development. The British also knighted him and reigned as Diwan in Mysore between 1912 and 1918.
Sir was appraised for his role in inventing ‘block systems.’ To enhance water supply and storage, he designed and built a water drawbridge irrigation system in a waterbody close to Pune. Initially erected at Khadakvasla Reservoir, this irrigation system was taken at the Tigra Dam or Mysuru’s KRS Dam.
