The Indian Volleyball Team's History

The sport was well organised when the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) was established in 1951. This helped India discover various talents that excelled in the Indian volleyball team.

The structure of the sport was improved with the establishment of the Volleyball Federation of India in 1951, and in 1952 the state championship became the first senior national championship. This platform has spawned many talents who have represented India in international competitions.

The Indian Volleyball Federation was established in 1951. Before the establishment of the Indian Volleyball Federation, the Indian Olympic Association hosted the games, and weekly volleyball championships were held every two years between 1936 and 1950. The first championship was held in Lahore (now Pakistan) in 1936. In 1951, the Indian Volleyball Federation was established, and the first meeting was held in Ludhiana, Punjab.

India at the Asian Games

The Indian volleyball team significantly influenced the Asian Games, winning the Tokyo Asian Games in 1955 and the Asian Games in 1958. Gurudev Singh captained the volleyball squad at the time. India defeated Hong Kong and the Philippines but fell short against Iran and Japan.

The 1962 Asian Games team was led by DP Padmanabhan Nair, who was part of the 1958 team. This time, the team started with three straight victories against Burma, Cambodia and Pakistan. India found their match against their arch-rivals Japan who satisfied India with a silver medal. The Indian volleyball team finished fourth and fifth in the 1966 and 1974 Asian Games, which were not included in the 1970 edition. They finished seventh at the 1978 Games and fourth at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

India sent its best team to the Asian Games in 1986 in Seoul. G.V. Sreedharan, K. Udayakumar, Abdul Basit, Dale Eng, and B.W. Cyril Valor led the team with players like Ramana. Indian volleyball legend Jimmy George was also present in that team. The latter had one of the most graceful jumps in history, and his ability to hang in the air was astonishing, especially given his large frame.

The Indian volleyball group began the Asian Games with four consecutive victories over Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Indonesia. South Korea defeated India. However, owing to Jimmy George, India was able to defeat Japan in the interim.

The Indian men’s volleyball squad earned bronze at the 14th Asian Under-18 Championship in Tehran, Iran, defeating Korea 3-2. India also defeated Korea in the preliminary round but lost to Iran in the semi-final. India’s U18 team has advanced to the FIVB Men’s U19 Volleyball World Championship. Japan defeated Iran in the final to win the gold medal. According to the competition results, China ranked 5th, and Taiwan ranked 6th.
