Tips and Tricks to Solve Code Relation Questions

The main problem in code relation questions is that it is difficult to interpret a given relationship string that is coded. Symbols confuse many people. Although there are certain tips and tricks to solve those questions without wasting time.

Check gender

To eliminate the wrong options you can identify the sex of the person who is given in the question and then rule out the wrong options accordingly. For example, in the question the person given is male then all the options such as mother, daughter can be eliminated and vice versa.

Now, there are two types of coding patterns:

  1. Forward type

  2. Backward type

The rule for checking the sex for each one is different. Read the table given below carefully to understand the method:

Forward Type

Backward Type

A + B means A is the father of B

A $ B means B is the father of A

A – B means A is the mother of B

A ₹ B means B is the mother of A

A * B means A is the brother of B

A  > B means B is the brother of A

A / B means A is the sister of B

A < B means B is the sister of A

A Φ B means A is the husband of B

A α B means B is the husband of A

A Ω B means A is the wife of B

A β B means B is the wife of A

A ∪ B means A is the son of B

A @ B means B is the son of A

A ∩ B means A is the daughter of B

A # B means B is the daughter of A

In forward coding, you need to eliminate the option if the symbol is immediately after the person in question denotes the wrong sex. On the other in backward coding eliminate the option if the symbol immediately before the person in question indicates the wrong sex.

Check Generation Gap

If you can estimate the generation gap between two persons then you can easily rule out options that don’t have your estimated generation gap. Consider the following things when calculating the generation gap:

  • Mother/father to son or daughter has a +1 generation gap.

  • Son/daughter to mother/father has a -1 generation gap.

  • Brothers/sisters and husband/wife have 0 generation gap.

Draw Family Tree Diagrams

Using the above 2 tricks you can easily eliminate the wrong options. But, you will get some options that you think are right. How do you find which is the correct answer among those left out options? To find the correct answer you need to draw a family tree diagram. Follow the guidelines given below to draw a tree diagram:

  • To indicate parent-child relationships draw vertical lines.

  • For marriages use horizontal lines.

  • You can use diagonal lines for the representation of sibling relationships.

  • Use + for male and – for female.

Conclusion

If you use the tricks given in this article you will easily solve blood relation questions. Most importantly, remember all the terminologies used in relationships. Apart from the tips given below, I would recommend you to not apply the questions to yourself. Some people tell you to assume yourself in the question. This is not a bad tip in particular but, use it only in simple questions. If you apply this trick to complex questions you will definitely get confused. Break the long questions into small parts. Finally, draw neat family diagrams to find the correct option. Solve a lot of questions to build confidence and clarity in your concepts.
