Mental Reasoning is a very important thing when it comes to competitive examinations and entrance exams. In mental reasoning, the basic intelligence and level of aptitude of the candidate are known and tested.
As we all are aware of MCQ’S (Multiple Choice Questions) in exams where a question is asked to us along with four answers to it. Only one of them is correct.
Similarly, Assertion and Reasoning is a type of ‘Question Asking’ format where the student is given two statements (an assertion and a reason) regarding a specific topic of any subject. One must be able to determine if the given statement or statements are false or true and if the statement is false it must be supported with a valid reason and explanation.
If in case both the given statements are correct, a determination to state whether the reason supports the assertion or not must be provided.
In simple language, an Assertion is a simple statement and a Reason is an explanation for the assertion. It is a question asking format that consists of two statements- an assertion statement and the other one is called a reason statement. Read and know the data in the assertion and the reason to understand the topic being talked about or mentioned.
Depending on one’s understanding we are required to make the correct decision to choose from the two options given to us in the question.
Tips for Assertion and Reason-
Tip 1- If both the given statements, that is the assertion as well as the reason are true then your desired answer will always be anyone between ‘option A’ and ‘option B’.
Tip 2- If from the given statements the assertion is false and the reason is true then the correct or desired answer will be ‘option C’.
Tip 3- If from the given statements the assertion is true and the reason is false then the correct or desired answer will be ‘option D’.
Example of Assertion and Reason
Assertion- Combustion reactions are also called ‘Exothermic Oxidation Reactions’.
Reason– In this reaction heat is evolved and oxygen is added.
As our common knowledge, we know that both the given statements, the assertion as well as the reason are true. Thus, the correct and desired answers will be from ‘option A/1 or option B/2’.
If we wish to find out that the given reason is a true explanation for the given, assertion then u must read the assertion and reason both by putting conjunction between the two statements (like because/ that is why)
For example- Combustion reactions are also called ‘Exothermic Oxidation Reactions’ because in this reaction heat is evolved and oxygen is added.
Assertion- Plants have green leaves.
Reason– Plants contain a green coloured pigment called chlorophyll.
As our common knowledge, we know that from both the given statements, the assertion is true but the reason is wrong. Thus, the correct and desired answers will be from ‘option D/4’.
If we wish to find out that the given reason is a true explanation for the given, assertion then u must read the assertion and reason both by putting conjunction between the two statements (like because/ that is why)
For example- Plants have green leaves because plants contain a green coloured pigment called chlorophyll which is false.
Chlorophyll is the green coloured pigment that gives colour to the leaves.
The general format for such types of questioning schemes is:
From the given Assertion and Reason point out if:
(a) Both, A and R, are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both, A and R, are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) If A is true but R is false.
(d) If A is false but R is true.
Conclusion
A student must be taught and if not then he/she must learn to put their brains to use and think. Just a simple bluff to questions will not help them achieve greatness in life. Reasoning along with the thought of a rightful judgement is what will make them better humans.
Assertion and Reason help to boost one’s mental and verbal thinking capacity. Thinking and reasoning power gets a huge upward push and the thinking capacity of the brain increases too.
