Boat and Stream

The boat and Stream formula is considered an important chapter in quantitative aptitude. In this article, you will get to know a clear idea of this topic.

Table of Content
  •

To understand the concept of Boat and Stream, you must be exhausted. You will hardly find a complex concept on this topic all over the internet. To crack any bank exam, you must have in-depth knowledge of arithmetic unless you have a hard time cracking the exams considering the recent competition.. All you need is concentration. You can ace your competitors mastering this chapter. So, what are you waiting for?

Boat and Stream context:

The chapter Boat and Stream might sound familiar to you. Remember, in your school days. It was an important chapter in arithmetic. In any competitive exam, you have to learn it well. Let me explain to you some basics of this chapter.

When a boat sails in a river, how does it move in that River? In that case, the River also has some speed. When boats move in favour of the River’s speed, We call the speed Downstream speed. In the case of the opposite, the speed is called Upstream speed. In the next part, I am going to explain it.

Explanation of Boat and Stream:

What is Downstream?

When the boat moves in the direction of the River, it is called downstream speed. The speed is calculated by adding boats and Stream speed in this case.

What is Upstream?

Here the scene is pretty opposite. The boat moves in the opposite direction of the Stream. This is called upstream speed. This speed is calculated by subtracting boat and Stream speed.

Boat and stream formula :

You already know the definition of upstream and downstream. Now understand the formulae.

Let us say the downstream speed is X

  And upstream speed is Y

Interpret the speed of a boat in still water is ‘u’ and the speed of Stream is ‘v’

To calculate the downstream speed, we need to add you and v. it means-

X = u+v

When you calculate the upstream speed, you will subtract the River’s speed from the boat’s speed.

So Y = u-v

So if you are given the speed of the boat and Stream, you can easily calculate the downstream and upstream speed. What if you are given the upstream and downstream speed? How will you calculate the boats or rivers speed?

If you understand the whole concept, you can easily calculate the other’s speed. Let us say you have given X, and if the speed of the River is v, what will be the boat’s speed?

From the previous formula,

  •       X = u+v

 Or, u = X-v

In this way, you can calculate other speeds too.

If you find it easy so far, you are halfway done. To earn mastery, you need to know the fundamentals well.

Let us say you are given the downstream and upstream speed, and you can calculate the boat’s speed in still water and Stream too.

Here are the formulae-

The speed of a boat in still water ( u)= ½ (X+Y)

The speed of the Stream (v) = ½ ( X-Y)

Formula at a glance:

  • X = u+v
  • Y = u-v
  • U = ½ ( X+Y)
  • V = ½ ( X-Y)

With the help of these formulae, you can solve any problem of Boat and Stream. Do not try to mug up the whole formulae. Understand the concept, and you will easily solve the problems.

 Examples:

After grasping the whole concept, understand how to solve mathematical problems.

  • If a girl can row upstream at 4 km/hr and downstream at 5 km/hr. Find the girl’s rate in still water and the current rate or the Stream’s speed?

                Speed upstream = 4 km/hr.

         Speed downstream= 5 km/hr.

          Rate in still water = ½ ( 10+4)= 14 km/hr

           Rate of the current = ½ ( 10-4) = 6 km/hr

It was a basic example. Make sure you understand well. Now let us move to those questions that come in your exams.

  • A boat rows a distance of 25 km in 3 hours in the direction of the Stream. It covers the same distance in 7 hours in the opposite direction of the Stream. Find the speed of the boat in still water.

   The upstream speed is = ( 25/7) = 3.5 km/hr

   The downstream speed is= ( 25/3) = 8.4 km/hr

The speed of the boat in still water is = ½ ( 3.5+ 8.4) = 11.9/2 =  5.95km /hr

Conclusion:

Boat and Stream are among those chapters that can help you score high. Are you a banking aspirant and find it difficult to understand arithmetic chapters? Let me tell you a secret. You can target those easy arithmetic chapters. Boat and Stream is one of them.

You can easily grasp the concept of this chapter. If you have not studied Mathematics in your college, you will still understand this chapter. The boat moves in the opposite direction of the Stream. This is called upstream speed.  In this article, I have explained the concept of Boat and Stream from scratch.

Ans : You can easily solve those questions if you understand the concept well. All you need these formulae-

  • X = u+v
  • Y = u-v
  • U = ½ ( X+Y)
  • V = ½ ( X-Y)

Here X is downstream Speed, Y is Up speed stream. You are the speed of the boat in still water, and v is the speed of the Stream.

Ans : The chapter Boat and Stream is related to speed. The speed is calculated by dividing the distance by time.

If a person can cover 50 km and his speed is 10 km/hr. In how much time can he cover the distance?

The speed is 10 km/hr. It means the person can cover 10 km in 1 hour. So how much time will he need to cover 50 km?

He will need 50/10 = 5 hours.

Ans : When the boat moves in the direction of the River, it is called downstream speed. The speed is calculated by adding boats and Stream speed in this case.
