Among the mathematical terminologies, inverse proportion refers to an equation where the proportion shows an indirect relation between two quantities. Based on this conceptual fact, this current study has aimed to discuss the definition of the inverse ratio. Along with that, this particular study will include a discussion that will discuss the meaning of inverse proportion. In addition, the explanation of the term inversely proportional has been explained along with the formula of inverse proportion. On the other hand, the differences between direct and inverse proportion have been identified and mentioned in this present study.
Definition of Inverse proportion
As per the mathematical terminology, when it has been identified that two properties share a relation to each other in an inverse manner, the proportion of those two properties has been considered an inverse proportion. In a simpler manner, it can be explained by stating that, between two proportions, it has been found that when one property increases its quantity, the other property of the proportion decreases its quantity. In such circumstances, the proportion that lies between the two quantities has been recognised as the inverse proportion. On the other hand, it has been seen that the quantities of both products in an inverse proportion are equal to a constant value.
Explanation of inverse proportion meaning
In accordance with the definition of an inverse proportion, it can be stated that when it has been said that the two quantities share an inverse relation, if the quantity of one property increases, the quantity of the other property will be decreased in an automatic manner. In the other words, it can be stated that if the quantities of the product values are irrespective of a change, and sets equality to a constant value the proportion will be recognised as the inverse proportion. The inversely proportional situation occurs between two products when the quantity of one of them will increase and at the same time, the quantity of the other property will decrease at the same rate.
Explanation of inverse proportion graph
It has been found that the graph of inverse proportion has been considered a curve. This curve of an inverse proportion in a usual manner bends towards the origin. As a result, the shape of the curve forms the shape of a hyperbola. It has been conjectured that the two random points on the x-axis and y-axis represent the values in such a manner that are x1
Examples of inverse proportion
As an example of the inverse proportion, it needs to be assumed that a vehicle takes 3 hours at a speed of 60 miles per hour. Then the speed that the vehicle can take to cover the same distance will be 45 miles per hour. Here, the distance has remained constant but the value of speed is decreased as the time has increased simultaneously.
Inverse proportion formula
In order to establish the relationship between two inversely proportional qualities, the formula of inverse proportion has been represented. With an intention of representing the formula of the inverse proportion, it can be conjectured that x and y are two quantities. On the other hand, it has been assumed that when the quantity of x is decreasing, the value of the other quantity that is “y” is increasing. As a good instance, it can be stated that speed is inversely proportional to time. Therefore, in every situation, it can be identified that when the speed increases, the time that has been taken by a product to cover the same distance will be automatically decreased. Based on this, if y has been taken as the representative of speed and x of time, it can be stated that y is inversely proportional to the x. Therefore the formula will be y=k/x where K is constant.
Direct and inverse proportion
- In the direct proportion, the quantities of both the products of proportion increase simultaneously
- In inverse proportion, the value of the two properties changes in an indirect manner. When the number of one proportion increases, the other decreases automatically
- The graph of direct proportion is a straight line with an upward slope whereas the graph of inverse proportion forms the shape of a hyperbola.
Conclusion
The present study has shed light on the discussion regarding the inverse proportion that indicates an indirect relation of the proportional quantities. Based on this factual knowledge, this study has included the formula of the inverse proportion that is y=k/x where the K has been considered as a constant quantity. In addition to these previously mentioned facts on the basis of the inverse proportion, the explanation of the inversely proportional graph has been explained along with the meaning that has been represented by the inverse proportion among the other terminology of Mathematics. Furthermore, this study has included an explanation of the difference that has been shared between the direct and inverse proportion.
