Growth and Development

What are the meaning, differences and law of Growth and Development? Find out all the answers in this article.

Growth and development is a term that refers to the physical, mental, emotional, and social changes that people go through during their lives. Growth and Development is a process that happens all the time. Human development is a continuous process of emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physical growth and change that occurs throughout one’s lifetime. Massive changes occur throughout the early phases of life, from infancy to childhood, childhood to adolescence, and adolescence to maturity. Each individual develops attitudes and values that drive their choices, relationships, and knowledge throughout the process.

Growth:-

Growth mainly refers to structural and physical changes (like seed convert into plant and a plant into a big tree). It denotes the change in size, proportion, and acquisition of new over the disappearance of old features. In biological terms, the growth in a human being happens throughout his/her life. The growth rate is initially fast and quick until he/she attains maturity. Once the person is in his/her maturity stage, the growth process slows down.

Development:-

Development is connected to the sequences that people follow and is primarily concerned with the acquisition of skills and talents. It refers to a set of changes that occur in a predictable and orderly manner as a result of maturing and experience. It refers to a progression of capacity development through time as a result of both maturity and interaction with the environment.

Difference Between Growth and Development:-

Growth:

  • The phrase has just a physical meaning. It usually refers to a growth in size or length.
  • Growth is concerned with changes in quantitative features.
  • It is a natural element of the growth process. Growth refers to development in a quantitative sense.
  • Growth does not occur continuously throughout one’s lifetime. It comes to an end when maturity is reached.

Development:

  • The term “development” refers to a general change in shape, form, or structure that results in better working or functioning.
  • This area is concerned with changes in quality or character rather than quantitative elements.
  • It is a broad and inclusive phrase that refers to a person’s overall development.
  • Development is a broader and more inclusive phrase that refers to an individual’s overall changes. It is progressive and lasts for the rest of one’s life.

Law of Growth and Development:-

  • Interrelation

Various elements or dimensions of one’s development and progress are interconnected. What is gained or not attained in one or more dimensions throughout the progressive and continuous process of growth is certain to have an impact on the growth and development of other dimensions.

A healthy body leads to a healthy mind and a personality that is emotionally secure, physically robust, and socially aware. Inadequate physical or mental growth, on the other side, might lead to a personality that is socially or emotionally misaligned.

  • Interaction between Heredity and Environment

The growth of a kid is a process that is not entirely determined by genetics or environment. Both must play a significant part in the growth of the country. Both sides have their supporters. Most psychologists, on the other hand, believe that the interaction of these two elements leads to growth.

Environmental effects complete the developmental process when genetics chooses or sets certain restrictions on growth, mainly physical. Environmental factors allow for multidimensional growth via interactions with family, friends, society, and other factors. Heredity and environment work together to produce growth and development.

  • Individual Difference

Every living thing is a unique creation in and of itself. Individual variations are one of the most essential elements of development. There is no such thing as a set pace of development. Although it is universal that all children learn to walk, the age at which each kid takes his or her first step varies.

  • Association of Maturation

Maturation is the term for biological growth and development. Biological changes are changes in the brain and neurological system that provide a youngster with new skills. The process of development progresses from basic to complicated. A toddler learns by physical items at first, then progresses to abstract thinking. This transformation occurs as a result of maturing.

Here are some examples of Growth and Development:-

  • Physical development:- a child rolling over, lifting its head, or sitting up to running and doing heavy work as an adult
  • Social development:- a child smiling at mother, a child learning to share a toy with a friend.
  • Emotional development:- The capacity to identify and comprehend emotions, as well as how to react correctly to them. A child’s jealousy over a new baby in the family, a child’s affection for another person, or a child’s fear of the dark are all examples.

Conclusion

Growth and developmental milestones are used by health and social care providers to determine if a person is meeting the expectations of others at the same age. Growth and development is a life-long process that plays a very important role in every individual’s life. It may start differently and vary from person to person in the beginning but its end is almost the same in every person.
